Potty training

Hi there, hoping someone can help.

I've started potty training DS (2y10m) as he's been getting interested in the potty and having a wee on it in the mornings. We tried no nappy this morning. In about 3.5 hours he'd had 3 wees on the potty and 3 accidents. Then needed a poo and asked for a nappy (has always hated pooing) and wanted a nappy back on after cleaning him up.

Does this sound like he's not quite ready yet or should I persevere? I know there's going to be accidents, especially in the early days but I don't want to force it if he's not there yet. Equally don't want to keep him in nappies (well, nappy pants) if he is ready! 🤦
Any words of wisdom?
Thank you!

My two were very different in their toilet training so I'd say it largely depends on your child's mood/energy

My youngest we tried at around 2.5y and for a few days it was very hit and miss, with all the hits being when I encouraged him to try, rather than him leading and saying he wanted to go/try. Ultimately when he started resisting trying we stopped the training for a while.

A few weeks later we tried again with similar results so we stopped again.

A few weeks on again and he said he was a big boy and wanted to use the potty, and he more or less cracked wees from there. He was still reluctant to poo and I think this is a very common issue. Most of them were accidents but because we'd cracked the wees we felt it was right to keep on and just clean up after the accidents.

We had to find the right carrot to dangle to convince him to sit long enough to have a poo, and eventually he cracked this too.

Ultimately I reckon if you think he is keen to keep on going with weeing on the potty, I'd persevere as pooing may take longer. However if he starts seeming reluctant or you feel you're driving the training more than he is, I'd probably hold off for now and try again in a few weeks.

Good luck!

See how tomorrow goes. Both mine had 3 accidents the first day, but never had any more.
Let him poo in the nappy for the moment and tackle that later.

Definitely persevere. They often take a step backwards before it clicks. Once you've started it's best to keep going and push through.

Thank you for your advice everyone! We've kept on going, we're on day 3 now. He's had 8 wees today, 4 on the potty (of his on volition) and 4 accidents. Does this sound about right at this point?
I've also noticed he doesn't tell me or seem bothered when he has an accident and is wet. 🤔 He's been wearing just trousers (says he doesn't want pants).
Thanks again.
