Won't walk after 12 month jabs

My little boy has his 12 month immunisations today at 14 months old. He has them at 1pm. Put him in his highchair at 4pm and when I got him out at 5pm he screamed. He will not bare weight on his legs, move his legs and was just unconcolable. I understand they will be sore after 2 jabs in each thigh but I cannot find any official information on this. Hes now in bed. Unable to sit up, roll, crawl or walk which terrifies me incase he's sick and unable to move just lying flat on his back.
I've called 111, they said a clinician will ring me back within 4 hours. Has anyone else's child had a reaction like this?

That's an extreme reaction for an otherwise toddling infant and I would be going straight to A&E.

Just as a comparison my DC was inconsolable after their 1yr jabs but still walked/crawled/moved. Despite feeling tender and unwell.

didnt have this with dd. Try not to panic. Whoever did it might have botched it. I’ve had the odd jab I could barely move my arm afterwards. I would take to a&e though to check. Hope he’s ok

Go to A&E
My son had a similar reaction after the chicken pox vaccine. It was a rare inflammation in his joints which went away after 24 hours.
He wasn't in pain though, he just couldn't walk.

drpepperwhatstheworstthatcouldhappen · 08/11/2022 21:55

To be fair my son was exactly like this. Wouldn't walk for a full day. Wouldn't roll over. Didn't like being picked up. Screamed etc. I saw our GP and turns out it was just the pain from the injection sites and some babies find it a lot more painful than others. Go to A&E if you're worried. I was able to see my GP but obviously you can't due to it being 10pm!

Your poor little one. Definitely follow the advice of 111 but just to let you know I had the exact same with my little one, totally inconsolable but only after a few hours after the injections and couldn’t walk or crawl either (for a few days in the end), couldn’t even turn over in bed. I ended up at out of hours Dr because I was so worried & that hadn't happened with my eldest. There was nothing to worry about after a check up and little one was fine after a few days so hopefully that will be the same with yours but worrying all the same. The dr did ask if was it a trainee nurse who did the injections as they weren’t in the optimum place apparently! X

I'd be going straight to A&E or even calling an ambulance to be honest

Perennis · 08/11/2022 22:07

So has calpol been ineffective?

yoyoer · 08/11/2022 22:38

I had exactly this with DD, she was fine when lying still but when trying to move or bear weight she was inconsolable and was like it until the next day. She hadn't long started walking and just completely stopped. I got her checked out but everything was fine it was just the pain from the injections, apparently it affects some children a lot more than others. It was absolutely horrible though and if your right to get checked, hope your little one is okay!

Mine did this. He just lay like a potato for 24 hours. I didn't even consider it was anything more serious than pain at the injection site but he does have a low pain threshold bless him. Got over it very suddenly the next evening as if nothing had ever been wrong.

chocolateandtea123 · 08/11/2022 22:49

Hopefully you're on the way to a&e now OP. Injection site may just be really sore but better to be safe than sorry

MonsterChopz · 08/11/2022 23:08

Mine was the same, ended up at ooh with him. Was told it was post viral irritable hip due to immune response to vaccine. He's never had it since (now 6) but he does have quite strong immune responses following illnesses as he got alopecia both after a vad case of tonsillitis and then again after covid.

That was what my son had! I couldn't remember the name.
How long did it last? My son woke up unable to walk and by the next morning was walking again.

I think it was about 2 or 3 days. The first day was the worst. Day 2 & 3 he was moving about but very awkwardly. He couldn't rotate his hip and seemed reluctant to fully weight bear but wasn't in any pain.

Chloep97 · 09/11/2022 12:12

Thank you everyone for you advice.
They called me back and said its probably best to let him sleep, if he wakes up and is screaming and symptoms are still the same take him to a&e.
I didn't have to do that, when he woke this morning he was slightly better. Movement in both legs and took a few steps holding his dad's hand. Still won't stand or move on his own. Took him to the drs and they don't seem to concerned. Injection sites look fine and he has no temp. They said if he gets worse to go to a&e but hopefully he will be fine by tomorrow morning. If he's still not up to his usual activities to go back to the drs.

Always best to get checked so you’ve done the right thing. My boy was very similar after his too. He wasn’t walking by then but cruises and pulls to stand but he just couldn’t bear any pressure on his legs. The injection site was quite raised and felt hard but it was considerably better the next day.
