2nd centile

My 13 month old DS has always been on the 2nd centile, he was born full term (38+5) at 5lb 11. Each time I've had him weighed there's been no concerns and been told he's following the line nicely. Just had him weighed last week and he is now 18lb 4. He has only put on 1lb in 3 months (lost a lb during a 2 week illness). Being honest I never really looked into or fully understood about centiles until I was speaking to a friend with a baby the same age last week. Her DD is 24lb and was so shocked when I told her DS weight and that he is still in 6-9 months clothing, and told me he'll probably always be tiny. I've been thinking about it a lot and looking into the centiles, I know that the 2nd centile is uncommon, I couldn't find many posts about it and the ones I did, the baby had always gone up centiles by this point. I don't know why but it's worrying me a bit now. He is always the smallest out of a group of babies similar ages. Will he ever catch up? Will he always be the tiny one when he goes to school? I'm 5ft3 and DP is around 5ft8 if it makes any difference. Is there anyone else with a little one on the 2nd centile and has been throughout?

Have you spoken to the HV about his weight? Are they happy with him? Is he otherwise a happy boy?

I’m tiny (4’11), I was born tiny (5lb4oz) and always been tiny. People come in all shapes and sizes I guess.

My DD was born on 50th (7lb2) then lost weight and took forever to gain by which point she ended up on 9th percentile. She's 3 now and has hovered around there going between 0.4 and 15th percentiles. HV has always been fine with it. She's visibly smaller than her peers but it doesn't seem to bother her and tbh I think she's extra cute that way. She's finally started fitting into 2-3 clothes not long after her third birthday.

Someone has to be the smallest, if he's meeting all his milestones then I'd say he's absolutely fine! It gets annoying at the point that they potty train and suddenly need skinny bummed trousers and pants which don't always exist in 12-18! I think in the red book there's a way to predict their adult height centile using the parents heights. Me and DH are both slightly below 50th so it would predict our kids to be that too. So DD is much smaller than you'd expect. But then my son is pushing the 90th centile so who knows. And my 5ft6 dad managed to produce a 6ft tall son, so honestly as long as he's happy then I wouldn't worry too much.

My child was under the bottom level of the chart for a long time and then settled on the 2nd centile. She was born full term at 5lb 6oz. She’s an adult now and is shorter than many, but not unduly so. She’s 5 foot 2.

Night help, One of my twins has cerebral palsy, he is 2 and a half and has never slept a full night, not even close. I’m at breaking point. The paediatricians give us medication to try but nothing has ever helped and has seemed to cause more other problems than it helps. I feel it is time we need some help at night to be able to continue to function as a family. Does anyone have any advice on how and where to approach this?

If it's any help at all @jonojo DD was born on about the 75th and her height seems to be settled on 5' 2". I think that it's easy to see centiles as a competition with 100 being the winner but it's not like that at all. Just like adults, some babies will be big and some will be smaller. Do talk to your HV again though if you're concerned.

@Eljel you have my sympathy as DS was older when he started sleeping through. Does the HV still run sleep clinics?

I think though that you'd be better starting your own thread Wink

My son was born on the 0.2nd centile, he was tiny. He was on the 15th centile at 1. He's now 4 and on the 95th centile for height and 50th for weight.
