What to do after a fall

Hi everyone.

my 7 month old fell off my bed, bumped his head on my side table. I was in the bathroom And heard the thud, then the cry. I honestly do not know how it happened. One side of the bed is against the wall, so there is only one way of getting in and out of the bed.

so he was near the wall, I had my pillow in the normal place.

I just got up off the toilet and heard the thud. He now (6 hours later), has eaten, played, laughed and is currently sleeping (seen him move a few times). He has a bump on the side of his head.

I am wondering what/if any damage he could of caused to his brain?!

You could use NHS 111 online for information/guidance. Or give them a ring. Better than taking advice from random people on the internet. They will ask more questions about the event (how far was the fall, did he cry immediately, is he consolable, is he rousable, any vomiting etc).

Thank you. I did and they asked the relevant questions. Which was a yes to waking him up, not vomiting etc. I just wondered if it was possible for an injury to occur without knowing as they are so small.

If he's fine in himself 6 hours later then I wouldn't worry about brain damage.

What's done is done but it's obviously not a good idea to leave your baby unsupervised on the bed while you're in another room. I'm quite surprised by this....

I understand that, I have a pillow, but little one seems have rolled over it.

I think nearly all babies have rolled off something at some point, so don't feel bad. Obviously a nice playmat and safe floor area in future! He won't have brain damage if he is well hours later, and slow bleeding into the brain is highly unlikely. Just observe him carefully for 24 hours and if he has any symptoms you're not happy with like excessive drowsiness, vomiting or abnormal behaviour take him to a&e

Thank you. It’s always worrying isn’t it.

I'm sorry this has happened, but it's quite common! FWIW, I rolled off a bed as an infant and I'm here, alive and well, looking after my own infant Smile

Keep a close eye for 24 hours and read up on safe sleep for babies. You don’t leave them on a bed and they shouldn’t have pillows. Baby should only be left sleeping in an empty cot, or for a nap securely strapped into a pram.

Thank you. Congratulations on your little one. They are a bundle of everything aren’t they.

The little guy was on my bed, hence the pillow. His cot doesn’t have anything. We normally play on my bed, and I nipped to the toilet with the pillow there. Happened sooooo quick

A pillow isn't enough to keep a 7m baby on a bed if the child is rolling, you need to put him on the floor if you're leaving him unsupervised.

dementedma · 08/11/2022 19:23

He'll be fine. Most babies manage to roll off something at some point,or worse. I left my non roller on a mat in the middle of the floor while I nipped to the loo. Came back to an empty room! Cue panic then spotted him in the corner of the room, reaching for a flex that would have pulled a heavy table lamp down on his head! Guess he could roll after all!

Sammypooh82 · 08/11/2022 20:48

It had been up till that point. Had I seen him even attempt to roll over it, I would never have left him.

I bet that was scary, seeing no baby in a room, I’d freak right out too
