3 year old watching same thing on repeat?!

Just find it funny and wondered is this unusual? I'm pregnant and unwell and my husband had to be elsewhere yesterday so my son had far more screen time than he should have but he honestly just wanted Octonauts Great Barrier Reef movie on repeat. Woke up this morning and asked for it again with breakfast. When it introduces a new animal he repeats the name, he sings along to the songs, tells me what's about to happen and gets really excited about it. He knows it inside out I can't tell you how many times he's watched it over last few months. He dances along and laughs out loud.

Is it weird? Or is it just one of those cute kid-isms?

i think it’s completely normal

ThirdTimeIsTheCharm · 06/11/2022 08:12

Yep, totally normal. Ours was Mary Poppins on loop.

SpringRainbow · 06/11/2022 08:14

Yep, very normal in my experience. It will eventually change to something else.

Totally normal, there is comfort in the repetition I think. I wore out the VHS of both Mary Poppins and Robin Hood.

If I was getting bored of whatever DD was stuck into I would get her to try one episode of something else and then she often switched onto the new show.

polkadotpixie · 06/11/2022 08:19

We had the Octonauts 'Ring of Fire' movie on repeat for months! Totally normal in my experience 😊

SudocremOnEverything · 06/11/2022 08:20

My toddler has a small pool of films he wants to watch on repeat. We are watching Cars (again) this morning.

BlueRidge · 06/11/2022 08:22

Little Mermaid and the Lion King here.
20 years ago, mind.
I miss those days.

SpamIAm · 06/11/2022 08:26

Totally normal. At the start of December 2018 I'd never seen Frozen, by Christmas I'd seen it well over 50 times 😂

I used to watch Beethoven on repeat. Drive my brother crazy.

LillyBugg · 06/11/2022 08:26

Even at 8 my eldest will watch one film a few times over in a couple of weeks. Kids are weird. But totally normal.

And I can't watch Room on the Broom without wanting to throw up because that was his choice at 2 when my littlest was born and I was so incredibly sleep deprived and anxious that the theme tune sets my teeth on edge Grin

KatieKat88 · 06/11/2022 08:26

Frozen II for us. And now also the Octonaughts Scary Spookfish and Long Armed Squid episodes as she loved Halloween and we recently went to Cbeebies Land and was obsessed with the Octonaughts ride (despite having always refused to watch Octonaughts previously).

BiscuitLover3678 · 06/11/2022 08:27

I hope it’s normal because my three year old will frequently watch things on repeat until his next obsession.

sheepandcaravan · 06/11/2022 08:33

@LillyBugg theme tune to down on the farm makes me want to be sick. Afternoon sickness second pregnancy two year old watching on repeat.

Cuppasoupmonster · 06/11/2022 08:34

Normal. Current obsession here is the Highway Rat - it’ll finish then she’ll demand I start it again! Also Frozen.

EtonMusk · 06/11/2022 08:36

Teletubbies was specifically designed to cater for this, showing the same video twice over.

"Again, again!"

Kindofcrunchy · 06/11/2022 08:39

I've seen Madagascar and W&G curse of the wererabbit so many times... Totally normal and infuriating!

Namechangeforthis88 · 06/11/2022 08:44

Apparently little kids love knowing what's going to happen next.

The world is pretty confusing at that age and they don't have much control over what happens in it.

Pipsickl · 06/11/2022 08:51

It’s the octonauts snapping shrimp episode here. Every goddam time 🤣

modgepodge · 06/11/2022 08:55

I read that reading the same book over and over (and I assume tv show would be the same) allows them to build up their power to predict outcomes. They can ‘predict’ what will happen as they already know. They then experience the internal feeling of knowing they predicted correctly. This is the precursor to actually predicting what will happen next in new books (or movies).

i cannot remember where I read this or if it was a reliable source 😂

RewildingAmbridge · 06/11/2022 08:55

Try and move them on to ring of fire and caves of sac atun , although to be honest they're all the bloody same to me. I think Octonaughts might be addictive to under fives, DS would be exactly the same if allowed. He had tonsillitis a few months back and just watched Octonaughts over and over again, I turned off TV and said let's read some stories, his response but we don't have any Octonaughts books!

Danikm151 · 06/11/2022 08:57

Cars on the road for my 2 year old.
totally normal.

I watched the Lizzie McGuire movie every day one summer

Pinkflipflop85 · 06/11/2022 08:57

DS was obsessed with Oliver! at a similar age.

TimBoothseyes · 06/11/2022 09:27

Totally normal. To this day I can still recite the entire "Lion King" animated film all the way through (DD was 4 at the time and Timone and Poomba were her favourite characters). She's an adult now and works with meerkats and warthogs so it seems the obsession never left her. 😃

machanicalmovement · 19/11/2022 18:17

Muppets Treasure Island on repeat here, I my toddler loves it :)
