Not pooing

Advice needed

My 4month old boy is having trouble pooing, he had his first injections at 8 weeks and ever since his poos have been well none. He used to go one or twice a day now we can go 2 weeks with no poo

He is currently on omeprazole for his silent relux (but this started before this meds)

He was given suppository's by 1 doctor and lactulose by another and told not to use the suppository's how ever they are the only thing that will get his poo out but am scared he won't be able to poo on his own.

The lactulose seems to just give him really bad wind to the point he cries and arches his back and dosent make him poo so I am taking him off that

I will add he is NOT constipated, it is always nice and runny but has changed colour from what it used to

I am breastfeeding, I have tried water, sugar, prune, pear apple juice, massage, hot baths everything I can think of...

Dose anybody have anymore tips or advice on this please?

Thank you

Sounds like he could be impacted and the runny poo is leakage.

Has the GP seen him recently to check whether he has impacted stools?

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/11/2022 10:46

If you are BFing it's quite common for them to go for up to 2 weeks without a poo.

betty1001 · 04/11/2022 15:30

Yeah they have checked him over many times and his belly seems soft and they can hear his bowels working Bear

I was just wondering if any1 else has experienced this

They keep telling me because he is breastfed he can go upto 10days with no poo however we haven't had a poo from himself in weeks

If he's gaining weight abs he's not in pain I wouldn't worry. I think DD's record still this age was 16 days.

betty1001 · 04/11/2022 15:49

Yep he's gaining weight and is happy in himself, nice to know that he's not the only 1 that hasn't been in that long, his has been 14days
Thank you for your reply x

You know how to get him to poo right? Just make an appointment that you really can't miss and he'll do it just as you're going out of the door! Grin

Seriously though things that might help are:

Putting him in a sling and going for a walk.

Taking his nappy off and leaving him on the changing mat for a wee while to let him kick his legs around

A bath and some tummy massage. There are some good videos on YouTube on how to do this.

My son started showing signs of CMPA after the 16 week vaccinations. I'm 3 weeks into cutting out dairy (I'm also breastfeeding) and it does seem to be making a difference though I can't say for sure just yet as it can take 6 weeks to improve. One of the symptoms he had was constipation, in that he didn't go regularly but when he did go it was normal and runny. He was also refluxy. Perhaps check out the symptoms of CMPA in case its that?

betty1001 · 04/11/2022 19:12

Thank you so much I will look into the dairy, the doctor did mention it could be a possibility but because he wasn't going for a poo they said it was unlikely but anything is worth a try to help him not be in pain so dairy free I am going to be

Yes he did, after a couple of days of no dairy on my part he started going every day. And then we started weaning (onto food I mean) and then he got a bit less regular again but nothing like before x

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/11/2022 19:47

Unless he's showing a few signs of CMPA, and not just no poo for 2 weeks, I wouldn't be too concerned about it right now.

Just wondering if you go to any BFing Support Groups. Sometimes just having a chat about what's going on with other BFing Mums can be all the reassurance you need Wink

My baby is 8 months now, but from 6 weeks until about 6 months he never went less than 6 days without a poo. It was normally 6-8 days. He's breastfed. Interestingly since I've started weaning he's been ill and got a rash from eating dairy - so I'm pretty sure he has an intolerance (unsubstantiated as my GP and health visitor could not be any less interested) so cutting out dairy may be a good option for you.
As mine was happy in himself and his poos we're always runny, I've not worried too much. Sugar water, baby massage medicine etc didn't help at all - so I stopped worrying. He now goes every 4-7 Days, doesn't eat dairy himself but I still do.

Thank you your reply, I think he cud possibly have a small intolerance so I will try and slowly cut out dairy.

I need to relax more about his poos and accept he is just going to be Every 2 weeks 🤦🏽‍♀️

We have a running joke in our house about the dreaded weekly poo. It always used to be when he saw his grandad. And it was always huge and messy.
I was really stressed about him at first and tried everything but nothing worked. I ultimately decided I didn't want to give him medicine every day when he doesn't seem unwell and it doesn't seem to benefit him.

SassyPants87 · 05/11/2022 08:08

I’ve had DD go a couple of weeks without a poo at that age. Quite common for breastfed babies

Love that he got so excited seeing his DGF that he pooed. That's one to remind him of when he's older Grin

Agree that it's totally normal.

I can remember DS pooing when I was out in town and changing him into a fresh set of clothes then he did it again, and I'm talking head to toe poonami, and I ended up buying a change of clothes for him.

So OP, just make sure you have more than one change of clothes with you and go out for the day with him Wink

Twizbe · 05/11/2022 08:17

My two breastfed ones weren't big pooers. One does have CMPA.

I found they'd go a lot longer between poos if they were having a growth spurt. Then they'd do a mega one once the spurt was over.
