Question if your child wasn't talking at 2

dogmum00 · 03/11/2022 18:19

My son has just turned 2 and has no words other than no and mum. He babbles a lot and makes a lot of random noises. He says stuff repeatedly but I don't know what he means such as go and og. If your child didn't speak at 2 what kind of noises did they make and when did words start coming?

Check hearing
Refer to slt
Teach him signs makaton
Check the ican website

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 03/11/2022 22:09

I know of someone who had a 3 year old and he was not speaking more than a few words here and there. Almost over night he started
talking in long, complex sentences......it might be something (so worth checking hearing etc), but it probably isn't.

They DON'T all get there in the end, that's really bad advice.

You will know, OP, if you're worried enough to start to push this or not. None of us can say for you.

If I were you, I would:
Get hearing checked
Teach some simple signs for basic nouns (on topics that interest him, my daughter had dozens of animal signs before she started speaking)
Push a referral to SLT, or pay privately.

He may well get there in his own time, but if your gut instinct says it is more than that, then you have options and next steps.

Agree with you about gut instinct!

Agree definitely worth getting tested by a SALT - if you can afford it I would go privately otherwise you will be waiting a long time. My dd was very similar to your ds. Great understanding hardly any speech. She had slight glue ear but eventually diagnosed with severe speech disorder. Needed intensive SALT for many years but now speaks 99% accurately. Yes you could wait and see but early intervention really helps.

Forr every one of those
There is another with a full blown speech disorder
Needing intensive therapy
Getting referred and therapy is not going to prevent progress
But NOT getting referred might hinder the child

My son barely made noises a 2. A 2.2 he started making sounds a bit like words. 2.5 two word sentences. He's now 3.3 and nearly caught up.

JeniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 04/11/2022 15:23

My son needed grommits, also had hearing loss and needed speech therapy.
He had recurring ear infections.

QueenWenceslas · 04/11/2022 15:30

My eldest wasn’t speaking at 2 and used to growl. She had glue ear and had grommets inserted three months after her 2nd birthday. Within a week of the surgery, she was saying full sentences. She’s now 7 and never shuts up and has started speaking to me like I’m senile

My DC2 wasn't talking at 2 and unfortunately my HV wasn't very helpful.

If I was in this situation again I'd do this SLT progress checker and see if that says if they need extra support. If they so, ask your GP/HV to refer to SLT and a hearing test. The Speech Therapist will want them to have had a hearing test before they see them.

The lack of speech could be something like glue ear but I think it's worth doing the MChat Test as well as the above SLT progress checker.

How reliable is this? Sorry if I sound overly heckling but I filled it in answering yes to everything apart from referring to himself in first person - no me do it etc and it came back that there are serious concerns in my child’s development Hmm

ElizabethBest · 04/11/2022 15:43

Mine had no and mama, and babbling, but no meaningful words at 2. At nearly 6, he’s still the same but does use some makaton signs and can use PECs. He’s been diagnosed with autism and developmental delay.

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/11/2022 15:56

BlackCat do you mean the SLT progress checker or the MChat test?

Msgrieves · 04/11/2022 16:08

My ds1 wasn't talking at 2, I honestly don't recall what words he had. Have you been referred to slt? He had an assessment and I think it said moderate language delay. I think the next step was to record our interactions on video or something? Like a more in depth assessment.

He did in the meantime start talking before that appointment, I was always a bit worried he had asd, he didn't point much tbh. He had another assessment in primary school by an educational psychologist but nothing was flagged. He is taking his gcses this academic year and seems to be doing OK.

Blackcatinanalley · 04/11/2022 16:08

The first one - the SLT link, sorry.

Blackcatinanalley · 04/11/2022 16:11

So the ones I answered no to are ‘My child asks lots of questions like ‘what’s that?’ and ‘where going?’ and ‘My child is starting to talk about themself, for example they can say what they like and don't like’

In response - ‘You answered "no" to some important questions about your child's communication development.’

I am really shocked and worried.

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/11/2022 16:15

Black. They are fairly well respected progress checkers created by SLTs. If it's saying that there are concerns with your DC I'd ring their helpline.

There may be no issue with your LO but with our DC2 it was ASD.

TokenGinger · 04/11/2022 16:28

My DS had only 2-3 words at age 2. Nursery did a Well-Comm assessment, advised he was way below where he could be and referred him to the Speech and Language Therapists. 18 months later (last week) we finally had our assessment and they've agreed he's still behind and needs 1-1 therapy.

He does have lots of "words" now and can say some sentences but they are not clear to others. The therapist says he is "backing", where he pronounces letters that should be said at the front of mouth, like D, T, W, at the back of the mouth like G or C. So for daddy, he says gaggy, for "what's that" he says "got gat?"

He started to say more words just before his third birthday.

Blackcatinanalley · 04/11/2022 16:29

Is this for two on the dot or two closer to three? I’m just really taken aback because DS is so chatty, says lots, points to parts of his body, can make all the animal noises.

I mean he can show an interest insofar as he will shout TRUCK and run over to play with a toy truck but he can’t say ‘I like trucks.’ I didn’t think any children his age could, really!

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/11/2022 16:42

Black I think it's fairly common for them to be putting words together by 2, so things like "more juice" or "me want teddy".

@Blackcatinanalley they have different questions depending on age in 6 month steps. If your child is just turned 2, the age 2 one would be the right one - there's also one for age 2 years 6 months and age 3. It's the questionnaire I was sent a link to by my HV, and was enough to get a telephone call with a speech and language therapist.

The other set of questionnaires you could look at if you aren't convinced by the results of the Talking Point one is the Ages and Stages ones. They cover multiple aspects of development rather than just speech and language, but are available in 3 month steps. If you Google 'ages and stages pdf' with the right age in you can find them available for free online with the scoring as well. The 27 month one for example is available here www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.socfc.org/SOHS/Disabilities%2520Mental%2520Health/ASQ/ASQ%25203%252027%2520Months.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjJttTsgJX7AhUHg1wKHejDAdIQFnoECA8QAQ&usg=AOvVaw24mo-kXOF8M-O_V_KeIIQ7 .

Blackcatinanalley · 04/11/2022 17:28

He does @PritiPatelsMaker - I answered yes to that. But he doesn’t ask what’s that or where are we going.

My first daughter was speaking in simple sentences at 18 months. My second wasn't. Different personalities....

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/11/2022 21:45

Black. I agree with Crabby. Do and she appropriate ASQ then show both to your HV. Hopefully you'll at least get a referral for a hearing test and an SLT assessment.

TortusMaximus · 04/11/2022 21:47

Mine was three before he spoke, and now never shuts up. BUT he does have dyslexia/dyspraxia and this may have been an early indicator.
