They do go through phases of clinginess. I still have troubles with DD1 (4) when I go out.. tears etc. You can't be with them all day. If you're going out well then its up to whoever's looking after her to calm her down. If you're just popping out of the room, I would play peep eye. I used to hide for a second and pop out and say boo, then leave it a little longer, a bit longer, then run for it - or take baby with you. It's just a phase that they go through. Its a hard time though.

Think my DS (aged 26) should be over the separation issues by now!!!!! Although he has his own home he still follows me round when he comes for dinner. Agree with the 'play peep eye' - think my DS would appreciate that even now - but people in his workplace would know that we are both quite mad!

Jacqui - 3 1/2 months is actually a BETTER age to get your child used to some separation. Children usually display more anxiety at 6 to 12 months if mummy has never been out of sight. I returned to work when dd1 was 3 months old (none of vast stretches of maternity leave available nowadays!!). She was fine! You may feel bad about it, but she wont.In fact, I've noticed that colleagues of mine who take the full year extended maternity leave tend to have a much harder time in making the transition back to work, mainly due to the age of the baby.
