Cold Sore / Baby

Hi everyone!
Hate to be melodramatic but I’ve got my first cold sore. This has pretty much been a fear of mine since having my daughter.
A family member gets them and is sometimes careless. I know most people have it in their system but haven’t had flare ups.
Anyways I’ve been rundown for a while, I’ve got my first cold sore & the tingling appeared during the night. DD hit my lip when I was trying to get her back to sleep. I instinctively wiped her had with a wipe, although I’ve never had one before.
Now I’m concerned 😫 what’s the best port of call? Cream and patches and just keep her away from my face as much as possible? Am I right that it’s only contagious from the moment it starts tingling? so I would’ve kissed her yesterday, is that okay?
im religious in hand washing but will be more cautious and I’m not a touching my face kinda person.

any advice is appreciated, please x

I feel for you, I get them and have always been worried about passing them on. I just try as hard as I can to avoid DC touching my lip and wash their hands if they do. I don't bother with zovirax etc as never really found they work and just means I'm touching it more. I take L-Lysine supplements as soon as I feel the tingle and occasionally have found it doesn't materialise or is often much shorter. I get them from Holland and Barrett.

I used to use those Compeed patches. That way if the accidental touch your lip it won't transfer.

I was so run down after my last baby I almost constantly had a cold sore in the year after she was born. I drove myself mad worrying about it. There was loads of times I’d kissed her and a few hours later one had appeared. She was also very tactile and always pulling at my face and mouth. She never did catch one. Just do your best. I used to put a mask on when I was handling her. I got a script on a rolling basis for oral acyclovir. If you keep getting them I’d do the same. Meantime you can get topical from the pharmacy and the patches

Thank you! I’ll have a look into these supplements.

The thought of passing it on makes me feel ill. It’s came on really fast, tingling during the night and then a lump this morning. I don’t recall any tingling yesterday so I’m hoping kissing her wouldn’t have done anything. Hoping the patches will help!

Have you tried makeup over the patch? I have an event this weekend that I’ll be wearing makeup too - otherwise I wouldn’t bother!

My heart goes out to you. I take LLysine everyday and have seen an improvement. Always keep wipes with you and wipe her skin as soon as any contact happened. This was my biggest fear, grandparents never kissed my DC. My oldest DS has never got one but despite my preventative measures my DD got it from another child in nursery and has an outbreak now and then. Heartbroken as so painful for kids.

I haven’t but if baby isn’t at the event then I’d not wear it for the event and add it when home again

I've just written something v similar on another thread but our eldest gets coldsores (no idea from whom- neither of us do) and our youngest doesn't. She's had them several times since he's been around, including in the week of his birth, and the two of them are thick as thieves, constantly jumping on each other and hugging, sharing water bottles etc etc. He's never caught it. Just say this in the hope it eases your worries slightly!

Hi everyone! Sorry to be a pain. Just got a question For those who gets them. My coldsore hasn’t scabbed or crusted over. Do the patches stop this from happening?
my lip has like a white mark around where the patch sits. Almost like a plaster that’s been on the skin too long.
started taking lysine on Monday too (well done to those who can swallow them whole).

Ah just read the instructions again and it says it stops scab formation. Hoping it won’t be long until it clears but it still looks pretty raw…
