I just give ds2 (13 months) a toothbrush with some toothpaste on to chew / play with when he's in the bath. When he gets to about 2 I'll start brushing my teeth with him and sho him how. Worked with ds1.

Morning and evening after her milk. It will take seconds if she only has 2 teeth and she can go off to sleep.

At 7 months DS had two shiny little teeth, we used to brush them after his bath, then he would crash out on the boob (and I wasn't going to wake him up ).

Now he's 18 months and I try and do them first thing in the morning as well. He has pretty much all his teeth, but still more chewing of the brush happens that actual brushing IYSWIM.

i brush my dd's teeth (6.5 months) in the bath. I brush them first and then give her the toothbrush to chew on

not got round to brushing them in the mornings, i'm lucky if i get round to brushing mine in the mornings

must start soon though ...

RRB - dd is 9 months and only has 1 tooth. we are part of a chuldsmile project and she was at dentist on thurs. he said not to stress too much about actual brushing at this age but make sure i rubbed a smear of tooth paste around her gums/ teeth twice a day.

robinredbreast · 28/01/2008 21:40

It wouldn't have crossed my mind at that age, tbh. Are you sure you're not in danger of brushing all that enamel away?

My ds is three, and I only clean his teeth/he cleans his teeth, every other day if we remember

robinredbreast · 28/01/2008 22:24

no im not sure, i don't know what im doing!

never cleaned teeth at this age

Desiderata · 28/01/2008 22:35

Ah, leave it robin. You've got enough on your plate

Don't forget, she'll grow another lot!

JingleyJen · 28/01/2008 22:36

we have clean DS's teeth from when they arrived twice a day with a little sip of water afterwards.

Tommy · 28/01/2008 22:37

they can't rinse - that's why baby toothpaste is milder than regular toothpaste - it doesn't matter if they don't rinse

weeonion · 28/01/2008 22:53

RRB - i do it after feeds and nope - dont worry about rinsing!

robinredbreast · 29/01/2008 11:58

thanks everyone
weeonion im going to copy you

She may grow another lot but she will have the first lot for quite a few years and they need looking after as such.

BrownSuga · 30/01/2008 22:02

first thing in the morning, and just before bed. he's 8mths has 2 full bottoms, and 2 part tops. we brush our teeth in front of him now to get him used to it, he thinks it's great. dental hygenist said to use normal adult toothpaste, just a very small smear, it did not matter that they can't spit out if it's only a teeny weeny bit.

(she also recommended that adults use a teeny weeny bit and NOT spit, so the toothpaste bonded to teeth, or some such thing, and not to brush after eating as it just brushes acids into the teeth.. gosh so much to remember, it was so much easier before we all got so informed)
