Really struggling to buy for my son who is 2yrs 8m. He is slim and quite tall and I used to ensure his trousers had a drawstring that actually worked so they weren't too big on the waist but he's potty trained now and needs to be able to pull down /up by himself especially at nursery, so the drawstrings are out. All his 2-3 leggings are getting ridiculously short but if I get 3yr ones I know they'll be massive and fall down. I'm sure others must have had this problem, any tips which shops are cut long in the leg/smaller on the waist? Thanks in advance!

Hnm come up very long I find. My ds has short legs so usually they fit him much longer than the age they're supposed to. They also have elastic with buttons inside for you to adjust the waste.

I found H&M good for skinny DS when he was little. Vertbaudet was good too.

You can also adapt drawstring joggers by pulling the drawstring out as far as you can and tying on elastic, then letting the drawstring back into the waistband. This should give you a stretchy bit along the front of the waistband, enough to hold them up but also allow your DS to pull them down.

Adjustable waist trousers are your friend here. Then you can buy trousers which are the correct length and cinch the waist in to fit while still allowing enough elasticity for the kid to pull them up and down.

Lindex leggings. These were amazing for my very skinny and long legged boy for exactly the same reasons you’ve described. They have elasticated waists that are also adjustable.

Ooh that's a good idea, thanks, hadn't thought of that!

H and m trousers have adjustable elastic on the inside. Their cords and jeans etc.
I think most other shops do this for this age.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to make suggestions, some really helpful ideas! Hadn't even heard of lindex and definitely hadn't thought of adding my own elastic... Cunning!

Also came on to say h&m. I only buy their clothes for my long, slim toddler DS as they're the only ones I can find that fit him properly!

MassiveSalad22 · 01/11/2022 09:31

Lindex do lovely leggings that are skinny and have an adjustable waist so should hopefully work.

Sorry should have read the replies 🙄🙄

We find m&s joggers pretty good for this and they are long in length so last well. My very tall 3 year old still fits age 3-4 whereas most other trousers he's in 4-5

SubParbanMum · 01/11/2022 09:34

Zara kids do long leg leggings. Never tried them as they’d be far too long for my kids but nice style

SatinHeart · 01/11/2022 09:35

TU at sainsburys generally come up very slim on the waist and are sometimes adjustable too

If your son is going to be tall and slim his whole childhood, it might be worth learning a few sewing skills so you can adapt clothes - arguably takes less time than hunting around for clothes cut that way the whole time.

To make a waistband smaller you make a tuck by folding the fabric in, pinning then sewing along the fold so you've made a little pocket bit on the outside. You can do it by hand in a few minutes.

Or there's this hack which adds an extra bit of elastic to the waistband to pull it tighter

Lindex are great and you can get loads in their sales. They're gorgeous too. They have little elastics and buttons in the waist so you can adjust them.

Actually find Primark kids clothes quite slim fitting and Zara, la reroute and vertbaudet are usually good. Decathlon might be worth try, think French brands tend to cut their kids' clothes to a slimmer physique. We've also had some success with trousers marketed for girls which often seem more slim fitting, if you can find colours your DS would be happy with. H&M do some really nice cord treggings that are super comfy but look like trousers but they're in their girls section

Snap!

My son always grows out of trousers for the length before the waist gets anywhere near fitting. I've always bought from H&M or M&S with the adjustable waist.
