Is this teething or something else?

Baby is almost 4 months old.
Every now and then she's been screaming and crying. Holding hands at the sides of her head.
she's done it twice today. It was awful. She's screamed and cried for a solid 90 mins. Like she's in agony. Throwing her body forward. When I lay her in her bouncer she was thrashing around so I took her out. I was rocking her - doing all of the things that usually work but she was inconsolable.

I gave her calpol. She continued to scream for 45 mins after this.
She's now fallen asleep.
She has been drooling more over the last couple of weeks. Is this teething? Or does it sound like something else?
She is almost 4 months so wasn't sure if she'd be teething yet.

She hasn't been pooing as much so she is on lactulose but she's done a poo each day over the last few days so don't think it's that.

This is not teething. Pls take her to have her ears and throat checked.
Also make sure she is not hungry or overtired

YoSofi · 30/10/2022 19:18

I agree, take her to get checked.

If it’s her ears she could be in a lot of pain bless her

I agree this isn't teething. Your baby needs to be checked over Flowers

I'd say ears as well. Poor sausage

NC444555 · 30/10/2022 20:56

I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow.
What makes you all think it could be her ears? A few people have mentioned teething which is why I thought this.

The way you mentioned she's holding her hands at the sides of her head.

mummyh2016 · 30/10/2022 21:10

I agree with the others, sounds like ears.
My kids have never screamed in agony with teeth, it was more like a whine.

NC444555 · 30/10/2022 21:16

She was holding the sides of her head above ears and slightly behind.

Teething doesn't usually cause screaming in pain, more a constant whinging and drooling. But ear infection is a real possibility.

MGee123 · 30/10/2022 21:34

Agree - sounds like ear infection or similar. They are horrendously painful. Do get her seen tomorrow morning. Definitely not teething.

NC444555 · 31/10/2022 07:43

She settled last night and slept all night.
She seems fine this morning, usual smiley self.
Her cheeks are quite pink. But she seems ok. And will be booking an appointment to double check everything.

Glad she's better, poor wee one.

Once she's old enough (5 months, I think), you could consider getting some teething gel or liquid that has lidocaine in (there are a couple of brands). Although not screaming in agony like you describe, both of mine have been capable of being proper crying messes when teething – the lidocaine gel/liquid gives quick relief, crying mess to playing happily within minutes, with the added bonus that then you can be pretty certain teething is the problem.
