Mucus in newborns poo (sorry nappy pic)

4 week old is always unsettled, we think she has silent reflux as she always swallows the sick but sometimes spits up. Not sure if she had colic too, seems in pain alot of the time, starts crying in the evening for a few hours especially after her evening bottle.

She is mainly formula fed and I pump just enough for a 4oz bottle of breast milk a day.
Her poo is seedy and yellow but tonight I've noticed mucus in her happy. Is this normal/to be expected ? She always seems in pain when doing a poo, cries out and just seems like it really bothers her...
She is on kendamil, don't know if this is the reason her poos are always runny and usually explosive - poonami style !

Ill comment to hopefully help bump and hope someone with more experience with baby poo than me comes along.

I have three children. Breastfed and formula fed (mainly formula) but one or two bottles of breast milk a day. None of their poos looked like this.

If it helps- my son was incredibly sick with reflux and colic- and we switched to cow and gate anti reflux formula and it was incredible transformation! He was a different boy- so happy, content and full!

Has she had a cold? DS had similar when he was congested

YukoandHiro · 30/10/2022 05:16

Look into CMPA. Reflux and mucous are classic symptoms. Colic? Rashes?

Beanbagtrap · 30/10/2022 05:16

Cmpa mum here. Looks like a reaction poo to me

YukoandHiro · 30/10/2022 05:17

Oh you said always unsettled too. Yes I would see the GP and HV to discuss cmpa. If they are useless and symptoms don't improve go to a&e to speak to paeds directly.

TheTeenageYears · 30/10/2022 05:24

I would visit your GP, DS was like that and needed to be switched to a soy formula (it was a long time ago and I think he was about 5 months at the time).

formulaornormal · 30/10/2022 06:14

No rashes. But does seem to have colic on the evenings, starts about 5pm and goes in until around 9ish usually.
She always has hiccups, coughs when feeding, we've watched her bring up sick and swallow it again, stomach gurgles, lots of wet farts, very seedy poo.
She's always been really windy since birth, she cries when pooing like she's genuinely in pain, and now this mucus.
One thing is we've started giving her infacol the last couple of days, could this cause mucus? I know it doesn't digest does it

Oh sorry, no she doesn't have a cold either

OP posts:
formulaornormal · 30/10/2022 08:47

Also another thing she does occasionally is when she's having her bottle she will pull away, yet she then cries for it back, then pushes it away again...

formulaornormal · 30/10/2022 10:55

Really sorry about the graphic pictures but I'm sure these aren't normal poos? This is what we're getting now, really weird texture poos, almost pasty? Again she's crying when passing a bowel movement.
We did switch to hipp organic last night, maybe that could be the reason the poo texture is changing ?
Any advice would be so much appreciated

Anyone, please ?

Hi just coming back with a little update, I've been to the gp and she suggested it could be cmpa, which is what I thought more and more I read into it.
She also now has a rash that's permanently across her chest and back. Still having mucus poos and still has issues with reflux even though she's now on gaviscon too.

Been given aptamil pepti 1 - is anyone familiar with this ? Hoping it'll settle her symptoms down. If it does the gp said she can stay on it

If pepti 1 doesn't improve things quickly go back and ask for an amino acid formula which is entirely dairy free. They don't offer these first as they are more expensive but lots of babies with cmpa still react to pepti.

Sorry you're on this journey too. My youngest outgrew her cmpa by 14 months (but still has peanut and egg allergy) but my eldest is still very allergic to egg and milk at age 5.

YukoandHiro · 17/11/2022 16:55

You might also find the CMPA Support Facebook group a useful resource too.

AutumnVibes · 17/11/2022 20:17

Yep, looks like CMPA to me too. I’ve had two CMPA children. Pepti 1 didn’t work for me, the amino acid formula was fine but as they were breastfed they never took it and I’ve ended up having to completely dairy free. Massive change in both of them when dairy cut out though, so worth the effort. Good luck.

YukoandHiro · 21/11/2022 07:07

@AutumnVibes Did yours outgrow?

formulaornormal · 21/11/2022 11:47

Looks like the rash is slowly fading... but I did notice it started to get better when I stopped giving breastmilk a couple of weeks ago, hasn't gone entirely and still feels quite rough but it's not as prominent. Other than that not a massive difference, still has reflux, still having mucus poo's.

I have a question - Her breath pongs today, a proper cheesy smell. Could this be the reflux ? Or the new formula ?
I was thinking it might be the fact she has a cold atm and her throat/chest? Is very mucusy. I was wondering if that's making the mucus in her poo worse?
If anyone has any experience I'd like to hear

AutumnVibes · 21/11/2022 13:17

@YukoandHiro I’m afraid not. Became less sensitive but didn’t outgrow. Sorry that’s probably not the answer you wanted but I think it is quite unusual to not outgrow.

YukoandHiro · 22/11/2022 08:25

Don't worry @AutumnVibes - it's good to be honest. My eldest is 5 as still hanging on to both egg and milk allergy. In fact the egg one seems to be getting worse
