Amber necklace on babies?

gotthecor · 28/10/2022 05:07

Ive seen some babies wearing these light brown necklaces or bracelets so i googled it & it came up with amber & the different reasons for them.

They look very unsafe to me but I assume they're not?

Can anyone explain the reason why they're put on babies maybe I've missed something?

OP posts:

I think they’re stupid and a fashion thing rather than a teething thing.

Putting a necklace on a baby is idiotic.

Tezco · 28/10/2022 05:15

I would never use the necklace, putting a necklace on a baby is a silly idea - especially if they're not taking them off at night.

When I was a FTM I was told about them so I put an ankle bracelet on my son so if it came off during the night he wouldn't get hold of it but after a couple of nights I realised how silly I was being a threw it away.

SpamIAm · 28/10/2022 05:40

They're just as unsafe as putting anything else around your baby's neck, with the extra added danger of being made up of choking hazards.

There are lots and lots of warnings NOT to use amber jewellery on babies these days - it is not regarded as safe at all!

FindingMeno · 28/10/2022 05:45

The thought of a baby in any form of jewellery horrifies me.

HorsingAround2022 · 28/10/2022 07:00

There are lots of warnings about these from
parents whose babies were strangled to death from amber necklaces, please don’t buy one.

WhatNoRaisins · 28/10/2022 07:04

I've heard some dubious new age claims about them so I guess some people do it for that reason.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/10/2022 07:20

I used one for one of my DC who was really struggling with teething pain. I don't know if it helped much - I was also using teetha granules, chew toys kept in the freezer, Calpol snd anything else I could think of to ease the pain. The upside was that the necklace never came off so didn't become a choke hazard. I was concerned about strangulation risks but was co-sleeping already for night feeds so keeping an eye on baby during the night.

Nope they're unsafe, and in my opinion anyone who puts one on a small child / baby is an idiot.

What an idiotically stupid thing to do.

People think it helps with teething

Indeed!

Anyone with a rudimentary googling ability and a dash of logic would be able to comprehend that they cannot work so their only benefit is acting as a great way of signalling people you should probably avoid.

MissPinkCakeyBun · 28/10/2022 07:31

Do adults with toothache from wisdom teeth wear them? No they don't as it's easy for an adult to say sod this it is not doing anything. Babies can't say this and the choke risk is huge.

Exactly, why would anyone think these magical beads are safe. Putting things around babies necks is absolute madness, your instincts are right OP.

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/10/2022 07:35

Yes they’re completely unsafe and obviously don’t help with teething pain.

No they didn't help at all

HTH

Candymay · 28/10/2022 07:38

Also teething isn’t like toothache. Adults think of teething as painful because they associate all their own dental problems with this. So they recall horrible toothache from impacted wisdom teeth etc and imagine the baby is feeling pain. It actually doesn’t cause pain. Same as when the child’s adult teeth push through the gum when they are 6/7/8. It doesn’t hurt. It’s just growing.
And of course wearing a necklace doesn’t make any difference to any pain from any source. If I saw a baby wearing an amber necklace it would signal to me that the parents are without common sense and logic.

SellingFairytales · 28/10/2022 07:42

That really is an upside, that your baby didn't choke.

PicaNewName · 28/10/2022 07:44

They're not long enough to choke a baby, the beads are tightened one by one. Not sure if it made a difference, I had it on both of mine like most people in my 'new age' circle. All babies fine.

FlakeySalt · 28/10/2022 07:47

My friend has used these for all of her children from when they were about 4 months right up until 4 or 5 years. It’s always astounded me- she’s a great mum and a healthcare professional and still thinks that putting a string of hard baby-windpipe-sized beads on a baby is the smart thing to do.

Apart from the main issue of a choking hazard, every photo of her children features these beads around their necks and look odd. Lovely pic of her one year old daughter in a lovely party dress for her first birthday, and the ugly beads like Lisa Simpson.

This makes no sense. Chocking is when something (like an amber bead) gets stuck in a baby’s airway. And can cause death.

I assume you meant not long enough to strangle. But if it’s long enough to go round their neck, then it’s clearly it’s long enough to strangle.

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/10/2022 07:48

*choking

RampantIvy · 28/10/2022 07:52

Surely, common sense would dictate what a monumentally stupid idea it is?

OoooSweetChildOMine · 28/10/2022 07:56

People are fucking idiots OP.
