Calpol plug in

My baby is 10 months old and DOESN'T SLEEP!!! Recently he had a cold and I bought him the calpol plug in. He slept through for the first time and was poorly. We thought it was a fluke but he kept sleeping. I stopped with the plug in as he was better and he stopped sleeping. I tested my theory by putting one in his room when he wasn't poorly and he slept through again. I was hoping someone could help me find something I can use for him that's scented at night. The plug ins are expensive and I'm not sure if he's ok to have them every night. Health visitors are crap where I live and you can't ever get through so no help there.

TIA

How strange!! But great! ... we have a vicks humidifier (which we bought due to coighs and colds!) and you can get small menthol vapor things that fit in it... and they are cheaper than the plug ins ... however I'm presuming its just the smell they like? Cheaper options... olbas oil, vicks vapour rub on the chest before bed?, you can also get some oils to put onto Pillows etc like a pillow spray for kids! ... maybe give it a try?

My son was exactly the same! I think he just hates being bunged up.

I agree with @jlr1986 , we use a humidifier with baby olbas oil in at night as couldn’t justify paying £7.50 for the refills of the calpol plug each time (which don’t even last long IMO!) we bought This one off Amazon - relatively cheap at £11 and also doubles up as a night light!

If it is the smell they like, maybe you could buy lavender and/or chamomile essential oils and place a few drops in the humidifier to replicate the smell of the calpol plug in? That’s the scent we had for the plug in, not too sure if there are different ones!

Thank you, I've seen the humidifiers but I wasn't sure if I could use them when he wasn't poorly but I'll be ordering one today. Anything for sleep.

I’ve had no issues using mine each night, @peachesandpippin and although my little boy is only 3 months, he’s sleeping in 7 hour stretches due to it! Only gets up once for a feed now which I see as a win.

The only thing is to clean it regularly to stop the risk of mold/bacteria growing in the machine - I do mine every 2 days using the cold water sterilising tablets (though I might be being over cautious with the sterilising tabs!) and obviously keep it on the other side of the room to babies bed.

Enjoy - fingers crossed to managing to get some sleep! 😊

Humidifiers etc are all well and good but I'd be more concerned that there's obviously something physical going on that's impacting his sleep. Have you taken him to the doctor? Being permanently congested to the point that he can't sleep without a medical device is the sort of thing that would usually trigger a GP appointment.

Hugasauras · 28/10/2022 09:33

I don't think he is congested? He was originally as he had a cold, hence why they used plug-in, but now he's not congested any more but still sleeps far better with the plug-in.

Could just be the scent is calming for him, OP, especially the lavender. I really love the smell of it too! As PP said, it's lavender and chamomile.

peachesandpippin · 28/10/2022 13:27

@MolliciousIntent he's not congested he just likes the smell. It's like it soothes him.

Try Snufflebabe vapour drops. Just essential oils and can be used when baby is without a cold to create a calm atmosphere as well as to decongestant. Seems more natural than calpol plug in smell.

Iminthemoneylife · 29/04/2023 08:38

Home bargains used to sell the refills cheaper. I don’t know if they still will.

casualreader2022 · 10/07/2023 20:28

I was wondering the same thing. Baby is sleeping so much better with them on - even now they're not as bunged up... Expensive to use it every night but some alternative would be useful I think.
