What age child and are they the type of kid that feels the cold or one that is always too hot and strips off and sleeps nuddy?
Cos that makes a difference.

Flubadubba · 27/10/2022 20:09

Depends how old the kid is, the temperature of your house and whether they run hot or cold.

OperaStation · 27/10/2022 20:09

Depends how cold your house it.

And now I feel like a moron.

Kid is 3. House is old, single-glazed windows, but rarely colder than 17oC in the middle of the night. She runs slightly hot, but not massively, and she has a quilt she loves which can go over the top. Im leaning towards a lower tog because of the quilt. But then I worry about her being cold.

I swear to god I used to be able to make high stakes decisions.

How old is the child?
The smaller they are, generally the lower tog required.

But my 12 year old is currently under a 1.5 tog. DH&I are on the 4.5 (tho I upgraded to 10 when he was away last week). The 13yr old, in the attic room, is on 10.5. So it also depends on how hot they run. The 12 yr old is also still in shorts every day.

StillNotWarm · 27/10/2022 20:17

Cross posts.
Id go 4.5. 7 is a max for that sort of age, and if there is a quilt ontop, she will be fine.
She will wake if cold.

dementedpixie · 27/10/2022 20:18

If in a toddler bed or cot - 4.5tog is max recommended

In a full size single you can go up to 10.5tog

My 2 teenagers have 4.5tog year round. Dh and I swap between 4.5tog and 10.5tog

demotedreally · 27/10/2022 20:19

Mine went to 10.5 tog when they got single beds. They just push them off when hot. I remember worrying about this too, if that is reassuring.

devildeepbluesea · 27/10/2022 20:21

Totally depends on the kid. DD is 9 and ludicrously sweaty at night, like her dad.

She has the lightest tog I could find (about 4.5 I think) and sleeps in a t-shirt only unless it’s really chilly. We have blankets in case it gets too coke for her (it never does, even with an open window).

StillNotWarm · 27/10/2022 20:34

@devildeepbluesea 1.5 tog available - ours are from Amazon. Might be worth looking in the spring for your hot child.

devildeepbluesea · 27/10/2022 20:55

@StillNotWarm brilliant - will do , thanks.

Unseelie · 27/10/2022 21:26

My 10 yr old likes 12 togs. He’s had at least 9 togs in Autumn/Winter since age 4ish. Was in 4.5 tog duvet when age two but then started to complain of cold, I forget exactly when.

Unseelie · 27/10/2022 21:26

To be fair tho they are silk-stuffed duvets which doesn’t get sweaty.

Rockandgrohl · 27/10/2022 21:34

My 4 year old was cold the other night with their 4.5 tog so I added a 1.5 tog inside the same duvet cover..

SkankingWombat · 27/10/2022 22:06

My 8yo is in fleece PJs with a king-size 10.5 tog feather duvet wrapped around her tonight 🥵 She really feels the cold though! The 6yo has recently moved from shorts and T-shirt and started using the thinner long cotton PJs. She has a single 4.5 tog feather duvet. Our heating isn't on yet, but we aren't in a cold part of the country.

Could you get her a zip together duvet OP so you can add in the thicker one as the temperature drops over the coming months?
