Which real nappies are most like disposables in terms of ease of use?

I really want to use real nappies (baby due in March) but DH is convinced he will only be able to cope with the simplicity of disposables (two bits of tape to fasten on, wrap up and throw in bin when done). However we are both not keen on having a bin of festering nappies waiting for binmen, or on environmental impact in landfill, so I am able to exploit the "wash em every (other?) day" hygiene and eco-friendly aspects of real nappies with him.

I have managed to get him to agree that I will buy some real nappies to see how we get on first and sell them on later if it's not working. Obviously I would really like it to work so I need to find the real nappies that are most like disposables in terms of fastening and minimal amount of handling of dirty nappy.

So I thought all-in-ones fastened with Aplix and using flushable liners rather than washable ones (at least for daytime) so that he can just flush it down the loo would be my best option and then perhaps shaped nappy with Aplix and flushable liner (simple nappy - no faffing with folding bits of fabric or adding fleece boosters etc.) and wrap with Aplix as second choice.

Any recommendations?

As a side issue, I keep reading that all-in-ones dry more slowly than others but it never says how long that is. How long does it take to dry an all-in-one, and what is the best way to do this? Have utility room so plenty of place to air-dry nappies overnight if necessary.

Thanks!

Fuzzi Bunz are easy, you stuff the nappy with the absorbent inner and then put it on like a disposable. They are the only ones I've used but I'm sure others will be along with recommendations.

Bumgenius are great too, really easy and my dh's favourite (also loved by nursery/babysitter/granny!!). You put the absorbent stuffing in a pocket and they fasten on with velcro just like a disposable. And fit BTP (dd first wore hers weighing about 7lb), so no need to buy extra sizes.

Obviously they don't suit every baby but we love them, definitely worth a try for an "easy" cloth nappy! BG also do an "all in one" where you don't have to stuff the pocket (absorbent material sewn into nappy), we've tried these and they are really easy, but prefer the pockets as you can add extra stuffing as needed (found with the AIO that after a while it's own absorbency wasn't enough, so added a fleece-topped booster which worked v well). The AIO does take ages to dry too - a good couple of days air-drying ime, and comes in three or four sizes rather than BTP.

No doubt others will be along with more suggestions, just wanted to add a vote for BGs!!

kusihies with a flushable liner i like them think they are great not as much as my terry squares

SoupDragon · 28/01/2008 15:50

Bumgenius. I used to stuff/line them all in the evening when they'd been washed so they were all ready to go.

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch · 28/01/2008 15:51

I've got bamboozles with velcro fastenings. You do have to put an outer liner over them, but that's velcro too. Very easy.

I have only just started with shaped nappies but im loving totsbots, can do them in my sleep, havent tried any stuffies yet tho

JingleyJen · 28/01/2008 16:30

we don't use shaped nappies we use prefolds - but I do prefold them and have a stack on the shelf already in the wrap to stick under Ds2's bum lift up and velcro fasten I think depending on how you have your system set up at home most washables can be as easy as disposables

Gingerbear · 28/01/2008 16:32

bumgenious, or fuzzibuns with tots bots for nighttimes.

fingerwoman · 28/01/2008 16:33

blueberry are absolutely fantastic

Nappyzone · 28/01/2008 17:30

any pockets but i suppose fuzzis might be tricker being poppers so therefore id say any pockets with velcro so yes to bumgenius. I have used aio and they got smely quicker and so i thought this was maybe as you dont seperate the absorbers like you do a pocket nappy iyswim so the air doesnt get round them. Pockets r easy peasy.

BabyBuftersNappies · 28/01/2008 18:56

Bumgenius and Version 2 are on BOGOF at the mo...Plus like someone else said they are Birth 2 potty so no need to buy more

HolidaysQueen · 29/01/2008 10:14

Thanks everyone! I didn't know about bumgenius and looking at them online they look very much like the thing I wanted - and I love the fact that there are different colours too

Just one more question: They say on the website to dry pail, then wash twice (once with detergent, once without). Do I really need to wash them twice???

With my kooshies i used to soak in napisan then wash once. THey were very easy for wee but nothing's as easy as a disposable for a number 2

Willowwisp · 10/02/2008 21:56

Bumgenius for me, they are brilliant!

I'm staying with my parents for two weeks and am using sposies as my mum pulled a face about washing them in her machine!!!! Everytime dd does a poo she explodes out of sposies, Bumgenius contains it all! I'm really missing them! I dry pail mine, wash on 60 with one fairy tab and they come up a treat, then either radiator or tumble dry, couldn't be easier!

I got mine on a BOGOF so got 20 for £140 in a lovely pale pink, they are so cute!

Do a search and you will some bargains on the V2 range, you won't regret it.

CarGirl · 10/02/2008 21:59

www.HemPresto.co.uk are absolutely fantastic too. Like and all in one put the wrap comes off so they dry quickly too.

Denny185 · 10/02/2008 22:03

Get something pre-shaped, with velcro and attatched to it's wrap, something like Kushies.

We have shaped nappies with extra liners and then a wrap, Im sure DH just uses 'faffy' as an excuse not to change nappies and when he does I have to have a supply of disposables for him to use - make it as easy as poss for him otherwise youll be doing all the nappy changes too!!

Chrissy68 · 11/02/2008 12:43

The nearest o a disposable is the NEW BAMBINEX all in one, new product for 2008, soft jersey PUL wrap with supersoaker sandwiched between. easy to use, no folding, no stuffing. Just put straight on
