Buise while nappy changing

Hi All. NC for this. DD 14 month old has bruises on her left Shin. I suspected it was because the way DH holds her legs while changing her. She is a very wriggly toddler. I had raised it a few times with DH and I can see he tries to use a different approach but I can still see bruises there. I also noticed a similar bruise but that happened after a day at the nursery but I can't be sure. Dh does bedtime every night and changes her nappy post bathtime. That is the only time he does nappy changes during weekdays as he leaves for work before she wakes up.

I don't think he intentionally does it as I can see he loves her and is a very hands on dad. How do you change your LO nappies ? I use the back of my palm to hold her legs up which works for me but even then it is difficult..

Bruises on shins are a perfectly normal part of childhood. My 3 kids are covered constantly from ankle to knee! Much more likely to be from her toddling into something or falling over!

RoseslnTheHospital · 27/10/2022 10:53

If he was holding her hard enough to leave finger tip bruises then surely she'd be in pain and he'd notice? Neither me nor my v large and strong DP have ever caused bruising whilst holding legs for a nappy change, Even whilst holding large wriggling toddlers trying to flip and crawl away.

Isn't it more likely to be the result of toddling around?

I grab my toddler and baby by the feet and lift with one hand, and wipe with the other.
I only do that because that's what the midwife did in the hospital when she helped us!
Never caused any obvious bruising, if you're child is bruising easily it might be some other issue, worth raising with the health visitor at the next check perhaps.

Does she walk or still mostly crawl? My toddler used to get shin bruises from crawling

Almondcroissant12 · 27/10/2022 11:27

I think it’s far more likely that bruises are from her falling or bumping into things while playing. My 13.5month old always has bruises from running around with no regard for safety! But if you are concerned that she bruises particularly easily then it could be worth seeing your GP.

We do standing nappy changes and use pull ups. So much easier at this age, there is no way I would manage to get mine to lie down for 3 seconds let alone a full nappy change.

We sometimes hold our very wriggly 13 month old to save him spreading poo everywhere he's never cried or seemed hurt and it's never left a mark. He does however get lots of knee and shin bruises from his cruising and toddling it's far more likely that if she doesn't indicate she's hurt from him holding her

TeaHotorCold · 27/10/2022 12:03

@RoseslnTheHospital I definitely have not hear her being upset during nappy changes frol being held. She wants to always get away though so I can hear annoyance at that

@AcceptYourself She doesn't walk yet, she has taken a few steps but that's it. She is mostly crawling.

OK I will keep an eye on them. They're always at the same spots which is why I thought it's from nappy Changing

Some babes mark super easily. Our boy has the baby fat of a small whale and so to stop him moving you actually have to hold quite tight especially in the lower leg area. At his last vaccine that resulted in broken capillaries which looked like a non blanching rash. Que A&E who laughed as have seen it many times before.

MolliciousIntent · 27/10/2022 19:06

If she's crawling surely that's what's causing the bruises on her shins!? If he was holding her hard enough to bruise her, she'd be screaming.

The other possibility is a medical condition that's causing her to bruise more easily, but if it's only on her shins that's unlikely.

Theowlwhowasafraid · 27/10/2022 19:22

My 13 month old is covered in bruises on her shins from crawling and she is learning to stand competently so often bangs her legs- I would say it’s from her crawling! My daughter isn’t careful and will crawl over anything in her way

TeaHotorCold · 28/10/2022 10:15

Thanks All. Thing is our living room where she spends most of her time is carpeted which is why I thought it wasn't from crawling. I will keep an eye on it.

She’ll presumably also crawl at nursery though and I’m guessing that’s not carpeted. Shin bruises are pretty normal for young toddlers who are getting mobile! I really doubt it’s Dad’s nappy changing technique.
