How often to change newborn nappy

how often should you change newborn nappy? I always change him straight away when he does a poo but should I change every wet nappy too? If so that’s a lot of nappies!

Yes I always change if she's wet. I usually change her every 60-90 mins (she's 11 weeks) during the daytime and then at every waking in the night (she wakes once now but I would always change her as the nappy is always full of wee!)

How lucky are you! My DS wake at least 4 times a night and we go bed around 8.30pm so you can just imagine how many times I'm up in the night

CorpusCallosum · 26/10/2022 21:40

Gosh not for every wee, you'd go through dozens of nappies. Costly for your wallet and the environment!

Every 2-4hrs and maybe once overnight (although stop that as soon as you're happy they're feeding enough as it wakes them up). I never used sudocream or similar either, unless your LO needs something on their skin the less products the better IMO.

Wow, I changed as soon as they pooed but otherwise every feed so 2 to three hours. Also after the first few weeks I only changed at night if they pooed as then you can feed them back to sleep before they are properly awake.

Agreed! So wasteful otherwise. 6-9 nappies a day is bad enough. We had no issues not changing pees immediately. My DCs hardly ever had a nappy rash.

FWIW, my midwives strongly suggested no nappy changes overnight, unless there was a large poo. Changes wake the baby all the way, and it’s harder to establish a difference between day and night if you’re constantly turning on lights and making the baby cold.

Yes always - even in the night much to many peoples shock! My daughter never had any kind of nappy rash

wishuponastar1988 · 26/10/2022 21:45

@Newmom054 I've jinxed myself because she's woken twice since 8pm Grin but yes we've had some good nights where she's slept 8-6 but she usually wakes at about 4 or 5 and then goes back off again. She seems to wee loads and her nappy is always quite full - she is breastfed and feeds ALOT during the day so I feel like she's constantly weeing!

MGee123 · 26/10/2022 21:49

Why on earth would you change after every wee?! That's what they're designed to absorb?! Please don't follow that advice - it's bonkers and nappies are bad enough for the environment as it is. Always change ASAP after every poo but otherwise every 2-3 hours is fine, or if they're nappy feels heavy/full. I only changed overnight when she pooed from day 1. No regular use of cream, no issues with nappy rash.

Would you like to sit in your own pee?

Poor and cynical attempt at trying to imply that people are neglectful.
Most nappies are dry to the touch after one small wee.

vipersnest1 · 26/10/2022 21:56

Carry on as you are, OP.
And hopefully you know to just take one leg out of the babygrow and then pull back the elastic around the s leg to look.

Nosleepforthismum · 26/10/2022 22:02

We followed what they did at the hospital which was to change before every feed. Obviously change straight away for a poo or if their nappy feels particularly heavy.

Mommabear20 · 26/10/2022 21:04

Would you like to sit in your own pee?

Modern nappies are so absorbent they’re basically dry to the touch. It’s really not like sitting in wee! Maximise the use I say! Never had any rash issues.

Newmom054 · 26/10/2022 22:13

@wwishuponastar1988 🤣 it's always when you mention how great it is, lil one's can always show how easy things can change. Exact same for my DS he's 15 weeks and was sleeping so well before. Hopeful we all have a lot more rest xx

MarigoldMoonStone · 26/10/2022 21:01

As a newborn you are meant to change after a wee, that is why a lot of the nappies have the indicator on them..I think a line comes up on them or something

I'd suggest the reason for the indicator is so you buy more nappies!

DozyFox · 26/10/2022 22:23

Sometimes when I read these threads, I wonder if my baby had something wrong with his bladder... as a newborn he weed constantly... like I'd change his nappy and the indicator would change colour almost immediately. I was weed on at every single nappy change. I assumed this was normal!

If I changed it every single time he did a wee, I'd have been changing it literally every 5 minutes Confused I just changed him each time he fed. Unless it was a poo, then he was changed straight away. Never once had nappy rash, so I'm sure it didn't do any harm...

StressedToTheMaxxx · 26/10/2022 22:28

I'd say every 3-4 hours.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/10/2022 22:29

MolliciousIntent · 26/10/2022 21:04

...people changing after every wee are bonkers. Changed after every poo, or after 3-4 hours. We used reusables and absolutely no way would I be doing that much laundry.

Do people changing disposable nappies after every wee realise how long it takes one of those plastic nappies to decompose? Shameful.

Samesies. We changed after a poo or every two hours. I would have gone insane otherwise. He was never soaking wet when he was changed either. The terries were so absorbent and his wees were so tiny. He didn't have nappy rash until he started teething.

Orangio · 26/10/2022 22:35

Every three hours roughly for pee. But DS didn't have sensitive skin. Obviously if he'd had any nappy rash we would have done it more often. It really depends on your baby.
If the baby doesn't have skin issues, then doing it more often has no benefit, and is unnecessarily detrimental to the environment.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/10/2022 22:36

Mine are grown up now but disposables were very good in the mid 90's even though there were boys and girls ones then.

After every feed unless there was a poo in-between when they were tiny. Cleaned with cotton wool and warm water and used sudocreme. They never had a sore bottom.

There is a saying that the first baby has a clean nappy after every wee, the second after every poo, and the third is lucky to have the poo fished out wherever possible.

Tomatopasta · 26/10/2022 22:41

As newborns they need changing more frequently as they wee a lot but gosh after every single wee? For poos yes immediately but otherwise that seems unnecessarily excessive, not to mention terrible for the environment.

I usually go by their feeds and wake ups. As a newborn my son fed every 2 hours so it made sense to feed/change and put down. Sometimes every 3. Modern nappies are designed in such a way to decrease moisture and contact with delicate skin. If they have really bad nappy rash I would consider changing them more than this or leaving the nappy off along with the appropriate cream (best option).

Now my son is 4 months, he still feeds between every 3-4 hours so I change every 4 hours. Overnight he tends to stay asleep, so no nappy change between 10pm-6am. He’s absolutely fine.

However it can also depend on your baby as well and they may not like sitting in a wet nappy for long. You will get loads of opinions but as
long as you’re not leaving hours and hours between changes, you should be ok.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/10/2022 22:44

Change after a poo and if no poo, then only when the nappy was obviously wet. The nappies are so absorbent there's no need to change after every single wee. Never had any problem with nappy rash.

LesOliviers · 26/10/2022 22:46

We changed her every feed. She settled into a two hour routine. Wake/nappy change/feed/fall asleep...and repeat.

Merryclaire · 26/10/2022 22:54

I change her every 3-4 hours unless it’s a poo, in which case immediately. I don’t change for wees overnight unless she’s fussy.

ZEWatson · 26/10/2022 22:54

Newborns wee roughly every 20 minutes, often more. They don't need changing after each wee. Change after a poop or otherwise when the nappy is feeling full 😊

Dobbycraft · 26/10/2022 23:00

I change straight after a poo but my newborn seemed to have a constant stream of wee, I'd never get anything else done if I changed after every wee 😳 can't believe people are changing them every hour?! I've always changed her roughly every feed (so every couple of hours at the very beginning, and now every 4 hours ish through the day). She sleeps 10 hours through the night without a change now. She's never been sore.

Runkle · 26/10/2022 23:03

I did before every feed to wake them up a bit for the feed.
People changing after every single wee wtf?! And no nappy rash here.

MarigoldMoonStone · 27/10/2022 07:05

Fair enough guys, I’ve only had one newborn 3 years ago & my memory isn’t 100%!
I’m thinking I won’t be as precious with my 2nd :)
