Confused about doctor visit

I took my 7 month old to the doctor because he has a cough, has had it for about a week and a half now.
Doctor said based on the fact that his nose is runny that it is not an infection.
He then said that because he has had it for more than 4 days he’s going to prescribe antibiotics. He also said ‘we don’t normally give antibiotics for coughs in babies because it weakens their immune system.’

I’m a bit confused tbh. Obv the doctor wouldn’t have prescribed them if he thought baby didn’t need them right? Baby is feeding well and has no fever and plenty of wet nappies.
So is it the norm to be prescribed antibiotics for a cough that has been there for over a week? Part of me wants to wait it out a couple days because I think he is getting better, but I also feel like I should give him the antibiotics because the doctor prescribed them. What would you do?

I'm a bit confused. Your baby has a cough but you think it's getting better and don't want antibiotics. While that's fine, why would you then take them for a drs appointment? I'm not sure what else you were expecting the dr to do, especially if your baby is already getting better. Sometimes coughs last ages.

It’s normal for coughs to last 2 weeks after a cold. I’m wondering what you wanted from the doctor?

@dampgreg The appointment was last night and he seems better this morning so wasn’t getting better at the time I made the appointment if that makes sense. I took him to the doctor because I was worried he had a chest infection but doctor said he doesn’t think so yet still prescribed antibiotics.

Oh I see. Well the antibiotics aren't compulsory so if you think he's getting better and you'd rather not give antibiotics then don't. Just wait and see if he continues to improves

If the kid is fine and just coughing,I wouldn't give ABs. Some kids are just coughy!

The cold is a virus and the antibiotics treat secondary infections which can be caused by the cold virus.

Your Doctor may have prrscribed the antibiitic as a prevention for a upper respiratory infections which happens sometimes with colds.
