Newborn Hearing Test - Help!

Hi ladies,

I had my 2nd baby last Thursday and yesterday we went for our 5 day check up which involved a hearing test. Her right ear was fine but the midwife was unable to get a result for her left ear despite trying a couple of times.

The midwife said not to worry and it could just be that she still has some gunk in her ears from delivery. She also has very narrow ear canals which makes it tricky to get the angle to do the test. But she did say that they were officially testing for hearing loss and we have to go back on Saturday to repeat the test.

I'm now worried sick that baby has something wrong with her hearing. Have any of you had this situation where you were unable to get a result first time and the repeat test was absolutely fine?

Worried Mum!

Thank you!

Yes. Newborn hearing test didn't work, got repeated and didn't work, got referred to ENT, dd has perfect hearing. She's now 12 so we'd have picked up on it by now if there was something wrong!

Needcoffeeimmediatley · 26/10/2022 08:58

Yes, repeated the test a few days later and all fine.
Nothing wrong with this hearing at all.
Don't stress, it's probably just fluid in the ear still.

Failed left ear 8 hours after birth, repeated at two weeks and passed literally within seconds.

Their ears are so full of gunk it's not surprising that some fail first time round x

It is common for them to need to repeat, easier said than done but try not to worry.

Anecdotally dd failed all of hers and had to have a different test when she was older. She was fine, just uncooperative with the newborn screening tests!

Both my babies failed their first hearing tests, both ended up having to to go audiology in hospital for repeat tests and passed fine the second time. Neither have issues with hearing, try not to worry, I remember with my first being so worried when it happened, with my second I was more of here we go again.

My little boys hearing yesterday didn't pass first time. We had a longer stay in hospital as he had sepsis so she came back and repeated and he passed. If we hadn't still been in I'd have had to return like you.
Try not to worry... I honestly think it can be just down to luck sometimes!

Happened with my youngest. He was fine on the repeat. They said at the time that it's really common.

ShowOfHands · 26/10/2022 20:31

(he is 11 btw and has perfect hearing!)

tiredandstripey · 26/10/2022 20:34

Both mine failed first time, had to be repeated.
I do understand you’re a bit worried but try to think of the worst possible outcome - probably would be that she is deaf in one ear. If her other ear is fine then her brain will adapt and she will be ok, even with 50% hearing loss. It’s not the end of the world. And it probably won’t even be that but I always find this a helpful litmus test of how worried I should be about something. In this scenario the worst possible outcome is both a) unlikely and b) not that bad. Sorry if this way of thinking doesn’t help you I know it doesn’t work for everyone 😂

DS only passed the one where they put the pads on their head after failing the in ear one 3 times in 1 ear and twice in the other. All done in hospital over about 36 hours. I was a private patient so I guess that might be why they were happy to keep coming back to try again? He was a c section baby and just very gunky- lots of spit up and had to have some breathing monitoring as making weird sounds (all fine there too thankfully).

YorkshireTeaCup · 26/10/2022 20:36

My DD had sepsis at birth (2 week NICU stay) and she had to have a second enhanced test, where they attached some things (electrodes maybe?) to her head and checked her hearing. I think they said that some of the antiobiotics they used in her care can have a side effect of affecting hearing. Anyway, she is now 16months and all seems well so far! But it did look a bit scary at the time on top of all the other wires she had going on 😥

Moonflower12 · 26/10/2022 20:36

My DD failed her the first time and then passed the 2nd time. She's nearly 10 now and we refer to her as 'Bat Ears' as she can hear things we can't!

Brieeeeeeeee · 26/10/2022 20:38

Yes, DS had the same and we went back about two weeks later for another test, all was fine. He was very mucus-y and gunked up for the first couple of days. Now a toddler with near supersonic hearing…

MrsSamR · 29/10/2022 19:47

Thank you all for your responses. They repeated the test today and all fine! Such a relief.

DD failed her first but was fine with them all after that.

Congratulations on your new LO Flowers

Both of my boys failed first time around. Passed with flying colours a week or so later. Don't worry, I'm sure it'll all be fine 🙂

Sorry wrote this before and decided against posting it as so many others had already reassured you! Not sure how I managed to post just now - came here to say I'm really pleased!
