Instant Formula preparation from powder

Hello, I know this must have been asked multiple times before but I would love the latest opinion on instant Formula milk preparation when abroad. I currently prepare milk according to the formula brand instructions but it requires an hour prep time and when I can’t prep in advance I use ready made formula (night feed or outings).

I am going abroad for a month with a 6 months old and they do not stock ready made formula. So what do I do when DD requires an instant feed for example in the middle of the night or during an outing? I am thinking of using this method. Please let me know if this is safe enough.

In advance pre boil water and allow to cool down in container. (Use within 12h?)
Just before bedtime or outing boil water and carry in thermos flask to be used within 5h.

When it’s time for a feed (say 150ml) :

  1. Pour 50ml of boiling water in bottle and add formula.
  2. Shake until formula is dissolved
  3. Top up with cooled boiling water (100ml) for a warmish room temperature formula.
  4. Feed baby!

PS: The formula brand says that any formula prepared needs to be consumed within 2h after prep. This is why I’m not considering of preparing the formula in advance. Thoughts?

Please please don’t lecture me about breastfeeding. I am, as many other mums, unable to breastfeed. I would have loved for my baby to grow up on breast milk but have sadly been unable to pursue this journey.

Thank you so much!

We’ve just been away for 2 weeks and did what you describe above. Our 5 month old was fine. We also took a magicool flask so had the option of making a feed up more quickly using just boiling water. We also took some readymade for the flight/to have just incase.

Thank you so much for your reply. This is reassuring! I will have a look at the cooling flask too. I am also planning on bringing as many ready made formula as possible.

Absolutely fine. You need to allow the boiled water to cool slightly first (thermos out and about is perfect for this) otherwise it will damage some of the nutrients in the milk. Remember to premeaure the cooled water because the formula will add volume to the bottle and if you just filled up to the line in the bottle you wouldn’t have enough liquid.

Could buy a Nuby rapid cool?

Thank you for your message. Good point about the volume of the formula itself. I will have a little practice at home before going away to iron out these little issues. I might find a water bottle with measurements. Thank you!

Thank you! Didn’t know this little gadget existed. I will read up about it. The only drawback I can see with it is having to sterilise in between feeds but that’s a great suggestion for short outings!
