Mealtime with 13 month old

Hiya does anyone have any tips for a 13 month old that just hates dinner time!

He used to be really good at mealtime but since turning one it's like he just refuses to sit still long enough to eat a meal?

We eat meals together and I do take the food away once he starts to get fed up & starts throwing it. But doing this, he doesn't actually end up consuming even half of it.

Any advice appreciated, Thanks!

Sounds like you are doing everything perfectly to me.

how is he after mealtimes? Can he make it to the next set snack/meal time /overnight without getting too hungry? If so, his portions might just be too big. Appetite can actually decrease around a year old as growth slows down which can catch you out as they suddenly eat smaller portions.

Thank you, that actually makes sense because i'm always thinking he used to eat a lot more!

He never seems hungry and can definitely last until the next morning without anything else, he is even not keen on his milk before bedtime so i'm not sure if i'm also meant to drop this now? He isn't interested in it at all I just worry he isn't getting enough nutrients

No right or wrong answer on whether to drop bedtime milk. Just make sure plenty of calcium throughout the day if you do.

also in terms of nutrients you can give a daily multivitamin and just focus on quality of food not quantity.

sounds like you are doing a great job in feeding him and he’s doing a great job in telling you what he does and doesn’t need.

He loves cheese and yoghurts etc and has a multivitamin in his water daily so that puts my mind at ease.

Thanks so much for the advice & reassurance!

Sounds like this household.

DD barely eats anything tbh. It's so frustrating and I get quite sad about it tbh.

Maybe PP is right in that it's an age thing.

So yeah not much helpful advice from me yet just a high five! 🥴😔

I know exactly how you feel, especially preparing lovely meals that just go to waste :(
Hoping it's just a phase, hang in there!

I'd just prepare food for you and dh and put a small scoop on his plate. Once he has finished it, put him down.

What time is he eating dinner with you?

lentilly · 24/10/2022 20:06

At one point all little one would eat was bread and dry crackers! Then it wore off at about age 2.

Don't pick up the food until later.
