On a school night how many hours of sleep is your 16 year old getting ?

I feel like my DS doesn’t sleep enough he gets about 8/12 - 9 hours and is always tired

no phone
no iPad
no tv (no tv in his room)
no games etc (doesn’t play computer games)
At lights out

He could probably get a bit more but that might be unrealistic for an older teenager with lots of distractions! Could he be anaemic? Excessive tiredness with that amount of sleep sounds a bit unusual.

ChangingStates · 22/10/2022 07:01

My 15 year old is about 8-9 hours, always very tired too

BertieBotts · 22/10/2022 07:02

On a school night he has to be up at 6, so I try to encourage him to be in bed by 9:30 but that doesn't actually happen, most nights he goes to bed around 10-11pm, sometimes later. However he does get up for school and isn't tired.

At weekends he has a monster lie in until at least midday if not the early afternoon.

Teenagers have a circadian rhythm that makes it difficult for them to wake up early in the morning and fall asleep early in the evening. Maybe that's why he always seems tired?

16yo - 8 hours on a school night. About 12 hours if left to sleep until lunchtime on a Sunday. Always tired.

I'm sick of listening to myself nag her to get to bed earlier.

AngieBolen · 22/10/2022 07:13

At 15 needed 12 hours a night during the winter (I don't know if that makes a difference). I knew she needed this much because she has Tourette's and her tics were much worse if she had less than 12 hours. Of course she didn't get this much and so had to catch up at the weekend. At 16 she needs at least 10 hours (she only gets that much during the holiday) so catches up at the weekend.

GingerPigz · 22/10/2022 07:26

I can remember reading somewhere that while 8-10 hrs is ideal for teens the problem is that their brains don't naturally shut down until midnight (ish) (Just tried looking for the article online but, of course, I can't find it anywhere!) So we send them up to bed at 10pm (or whenever) but they aren't actually getting the sleep they need until gone 12pm to be up at 6pm (or whenever)... So, despite being in bed for the recommended amount of time they physically can't get the amount of sleep they need which is why they are always tired (and grumpy!)

lljkk · 22/10/2022 07:35

5-7 most typically I suspect.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 22/10/2022 07:38

Same as pp, 5-7 ish. Makes up for it on weekends and holidays, last Sunday she slept until 4pm.

imnotthatkindofmum · 22/10/2022 07:44

Mine gets 9-10 hours but she is unusual in that she takes herself off to bed at 8pm then usually asleep by 9! She loves her bed. She doesn't sleep well though so I think it's self preservation to chill in bed for an hour of an evening. It's proving tricky in year 11 as it shortens revision and hw time!

TheProvincialLady · 22/10/2022 07:44

9-10 hours on school nights, more at weekends if left. There isn’t much complaining about tiredness apart from towards the end of term but that’s not sleep related. They are generally in bed before 9.30 but then so are we as we all have to be up early and don’t do well on less than 8 hours sleep.

KangarooKenny · 22/10/2022 07:45

Mine is very good at going to bed, she knows she needs sleep !
She actually sleeps about 11pm - 7.30, longer at weekends.

NancyJoan · 22/10/2022 07:46

About 8. She is tired in the mornings, but gets herself up to I don’t push to to go to bed earlier.

Garysmum · 22/10/2022 07:56

Mine have to get up at 6:30 for a school bus. By the time sport finishes, we’re home by 9pm 3 nights a week and 10pm on a Friday with a 6 am start Saturday.
Always tired but no way for finding extra sleep time.Years 7 and 10.

My 13 year old has a sleep disorder. His circadian rhythm is fucked, basically. Has been all his life. He doesn't get tired until it's been dark for hours and hours. Usually, it's about 4am that he can fall asleep, but he regularly goes 48hrs without sleeping. Once actually asleep, if he can go the whole way through a sleep cycle, he'll sleep 10-12 hrs. But often, he's getting by on 3hrs sleep. After 3-4 days of that, he will actually crash out by 9:30pm and sleep all the way through til morning, but it resets nothing.

This is why I love the holidays for him. I just let him sleep as he needs to.

@GingerPigz yes this is what he keeps telling me that he finds it hard to drift off Lloyd a tough one when they have to be up early for school

Gosh! That’s sounds tough poor child 😞

I thought the early years were going to be the toughest but it’s actually not lol 😂

My 15 year old has always loved her sleep and I would say about 8 hours in the week with a catch-up at weekends, however recently received a diagnosis that makes her very tired, to the extent she can have to miss school to sleep.

PlayItAsItLays · 22/10/2022 08:42

About 7 1/2 hours. She is better on 10 and will probably have more like 12 on w'ends.

I think maybe you should prioritise their sleep more? How can they achieve their best if they don't have time to xatch up on their sleep ever?

arethereanyleftatall · 22/10/2022 08:53

Mine is 14, and only gets 8. It's because it doesn't matter what I do, she is simply not ready for bed at 9pm, 10pm, even 11pm she's bouncing. Has to get up at 7am. She's not getting anywhere near enough sleep. So, weekends and half term are based around her sleeping, because she sleeps easily till noon every day. Which means the 7am wakeups are basically in the middle of her natural sleep!!

arethereanyleftatall · 22/10/2022 08:58

I agree @fUNNYfACE36
I've switched dd to only doing evening sport, dropping Saturday am football, and Sunday am swimming, because I think she gets more out of the sleeping.

i have done to an extent. There should be 2 more 5am starts in there per week plus another late finish. When extra tired practice gets sacked off. They come from school nap amd do homework and leave at 6pm. It’s stopping mid year 11. School grades couldn’t be better. If that changes, sport has to change.
School starts 8:25 and ends at 2:50. Rural school - our closest 10 miles away. Bus leaves at 7:30 and that’s 3 miles from here. Can’t move. Children in catchment are up to 20 miles away.
