Is this reflux? Please help

I feel so hopeless and like I'm letting my baby down, I've no idea what to do so any advice greatly appreciated.

DD is 5 weeks old and EBF, she's had the occasional spit up and sick but nothing major until the last week. All of a sudden she's been going sick and a decent amount of it. It's usually during or immediately after a feed but sometimes it's a little while later and usually if she's lying down. On these occassions, she sounds like she's choking on the sick and it's terrifying.

She had three bick sicks yesterday and has had two so far today. I'm talking full outfit changes and definitely the whole feed. Everyone I've spoken to has said it's normal for her age and she'll grow out of it but is there nothing I can do? The whole family had a sickness bug this week, though all better now so a part of me is wondering if she has a milder version of it but it seems unlikely based on the timing of the incidents.

I checked the reflux symptoms on the NHS website and all but one apply to her. Would she be better off on formula? My milk supply has decreased massively since I had the bug, I'm not sure if this is relevant? I'm just massively stressed out and exhausted and just want what's best for my baby.

Friends DD has this and has been to the doctors to try different formula and she is allergic to something in the milk - have you changed your diet?

twotiredwithtwo · 21/10/2022 17:22

@Threelittlelambs no I haven't changed my diet however I had the sickness bug Monday/Tuesday and my appetite hasn't returned so I haven't been eating very much. I am making a conscious effort to eat a bit more today but not sure if lack of food would have this affect on baby?

If you’ve had a sick bug she could have the same?

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 21/10/2022 17:26

It'll be the bug, give her a couple more days and make sure you're eating nutritious food and healthy drinks

twotiredwithtwo · 21/10/2022 17:31

Really relieved to see replies saying it could be the bug, this is what I'm hoping as it means it's not long term. The reason I'm not jumping to this conclusion is because it's presenting so differently as in not vomiting half as much as we were or DD1(3years) thankfully of course. She doesn't gave a temp either, she does seem a little more unsettled than usual but not much which I'd exoect to be worse if she was ill.

Because you had the virus your body is making antibodies which will pass to baby hence she is not as sick as you. Keep up the breast feeding as it boosts your baby's immune system.

Could well be the bug!

My dd had reflux and in my experience, doctors just aren't too bothered about it, simply because most do grow out of it. My dad's had gone by 10 months, but it was stressful doing extra mops up and changes

Chanel05 · 21/10/2022 17:38

Not my dad's Confused autocorrect! Dd's.

Michellexxx · 21/10/2022 17:38

It’s the big. We always found our babies weren’t as sick as older children/adults with vomiting bugs.
hopefully she will be over it in a couple of days.

twotiredwithtwo · 21/10/2022 17:41

Thank you so much for all the replies, you've made me feel so much better. I've been feeling so anxious which I think is a result of a week of no sleep and illness in every famiky member in turn 🤦🏼‍♀️ poor DD, I hate the thought of her having the bug but likewise will be so relieved if she's better in a few days.

Most likely is the bug, give it a few days and see what happens. She should get over it quickly as your immune system will magically generate immunity for her through your milk.

If it persists then it could be reflux. Things that will help: holding upright after feeds, having lots of muslins everywhere, having old towels handy, propping up the cot. You can get reflux wedges as well although Lullaby Trust are dubious about them (nhs do use them though). Gp can advise on medications. If you search on mumsnet there is lots of advice - indeed, it was the reason I joined mumsnet as it seemed to be the only place people gave real life advice about it!!!!
