How to explain this to DS (TW sex offences against children)

So following a Sarah’s Law disclosure which revealed that SFIL has multiple allegations by multiple victims of rape and sexual assault against children on his record (no convictions) we have cut all contact with him.

DS (6) has yet to ask why he hasn’t seen him in a while but is bound to do so eventually. I refuse to lie to my child about this but of course he is far too young to be told the full truth. What on earth do we say to him when he asks?

I would say something along the lines that SFIL made bad choices which hurt people and that you have decided not to spend time with him.

SFIL was not kind to some of his family and friends, and we don't want him to be unkind to us, so we are keeping ourselves safe by staying away. It's important to take care of ourselves.

Thanks both, such a difficult situation.

I would say that we've discovered that lots of children have told the police that SFIL hurt them very badly and that it's important that we keep you safe by keeping him away from you.

My 6 year old would 100% ask what he had done. We have always had very frequent and open conversations about bodily autonomy, safe grown ups, who can see/touch your body with your permission and why, no secrets; only surprises etc so I could tie it into this and make him understand at an appropriate level.

Then I would answer any questions and offer lots of reassurance that DC is very safe etc etc.
