Toddler has Covid - do I give Calpol?

My two year old has come down with Covid. He has been coughing a bit in the night and was a little grumpy and teary yesterday - those are the only symptoms so far. Should I give him some Calpol when he wakes up and if so, how often?

In terms of how often, always follow the instructions regarding dosage and spacing doses out on the packaging. I tend to make a note of when the last dose was given and then assess whether I think the next dose is required when the time comes.

In terms of whether... I guess that's down to instinct? If he seems very uncomfortable or has a temperature, I'd give Calpol.

Thank you - no temperature as of yet, but I will keep an eye on it. I’m so very worried.

It is scary but just treat it as a normal cold. If he seems off or uncomfortable, has a fever etc give calpol. He can have a cough syrup suitable for his age too. Try not to fret, covid is very rarely serious in children.

Unless he has a high fever or pain, you shouldn’t use calpol.

Why are you so worried? It's barely a cold/cough for most kids. Just treat it as such (why did you test? Just curious)
Calpol if miserable/feverish

Not unless he has a temperature or seems unhappy. If it’s just coughing but he seems otherwise normal I wouldn’t, calpol won’t do anything for a cough. Just plenty of fluids and offer snacks.

LittleBearPad · 21/10/2022 05:39

Give calpol if he has a temperature or if he’s in pain. It won’t do much for a cough.

If he grumpy and uncomfortable then give calpol or nurofen as per the instructions on the bottle. Don’t worry about if he is eating or not but make sure he is drinking.

Nice guidelines are not to give paracetamol for a temperature either, but to give it for the symptoms. So if he seems like he is in pain then give him some.

I treat it like any other illness so give calpol if he seems to be in pain, I normally try to stretch to 5-6 hours between ( and alternate with ibuprofen) so they can still have a dose if they wake in the night and need it.
As an aside, if you also have Covid I recommend writing down what you have when, I lost track with the brain fog.

Why are you worried? Is your toddler immune suppressed?
If not then they will likely be a bit poorly with a temperature. But that’s likely to be it.
