What comes after lactulose?

I'll be calling the gp first thing for proper medical advise, but looking for experience.

Second child, baby girl 8 months has been having constipation issues since we started weaning. She's exclusively breastfed other than food, which she has a lot of, very varied diet. Also water with food, she loves it. She has at least half a pouch of prunes a day since we identified the problem, no change.

Prescribed lactulose 3ish weeks ago, no change. Symptoms are very very solid poop that takes a while for her to do, cries and shouts while pooping. No pain before or after, soft tummy. I dont suspect a blockage. She's an extremely happy baby otherwise, gains weight well, sleeps well, feeds well.

Not mobile yet but trying, she was a bit late with the rolling as too content with her lot lol. She sits though, and bounces on her hands and knees.

So what comes after lactulose? Is there something I should be asking for?

Movicol prescribed by the GP.
Much better in our experience. Laculose is just pure syrup sugar.

Thanks @ColeensBoot . It's tricky even getting it in her as she has a savoury preference so I can't hide it in anything :( I'll ask for movicol - how long should it take to kick in, a few days again?

Another one for movicol (pediatric version) . Took a couple of days to kick in. Really helped. It's granules you dissolve and they drink. My DD was drinking from a cup by then so I just put in in water. I can't see why you couldn't mix with milk etc.

Movicol is good.
Lactulose is a very particular type of sugar that is not broken down or absorbed by the gut. It works by osmosis, drawing water into the bowel to soften the faeces. So not just syrup.

I second the movicol. Only took a couple of days to work for my DS, 1 sachet a day. You have to mix it with water first for it to work. 62.5mls of water per sachet. I put then put this in his morning milk bottle. It may be trickier if you're breastfeeding though once it's in the water you can add this to anything. Yoghurts? Soups? Etc.

Also movicol / laxido (same thing different brand). My DS has been on it since a little after 12 months, absolute game changer for us. It took about 2 days and I cried with relief when the 💩 squished out of the top of his nappy and all over DH 😁
Stir into water to dissolve, then we add to milk and DS takes it easily (he's 4.5 now).

Sorry missed the breastfeeding part. There's a Facebook group called movicol mums which is brilliant, people add it to all sorts. Yoghurt would work, or cereal milk? Porridge?

Just a thought - have you tried switching out gluten in the diet? Can be very hard on digestive system if they’re sensitive to it.

Try laxido. My daughter started getting constipation after stopping breastfeeding at 11 months , looks like she's come out of it now at 18 months ,not had laxido for 3 weeks now and seems fine, so was on it 7 months. Try a satchet a day in dilute juice then you may need to drop to half a satchet if too runny😀. I never figured out what caused it, had lots of fruit and veg, lots of water etc, think maybe digestive system not fully matured??

I didn't realise movicol is Laxido! That stuff is gold! Is the baby stuff orange flavoured too or will I be able to sneak it into savoury foods? 62.5ml of water is a lot. She won't take expressed milk or formula from a bottle even at nursery, just direct me.

@Gh12345 I haven't tried her on gluten free yet, that's a thought. Ds (now 3.5) had cmpa which caused constipation but also severe reflux, but baby girl has no pain or vomit ever with dairy in her diet. I was dairy free 8 weeks before and 12 weeks after birth just in case for the breastmilk, but she was fine with me consuming dairy before she started solids.
