A short sleeve vest and a babygrow or just a babygrow on its own?

It's a tommee tippee newborn one upto 14lbs I think

I think it depends on temperature in your bedroom. It's 17°C at night in mine, so my DC wears short sleeve vest, babygrow and a 2.5TOG sleepbag. But all babies are different, best to check during night if your DC is cold or warm.

It's averaging around 19-20 degrees atm so not really cold. Would a long sleeve vest on its own be okay ? Just paranoid about her getting too warm

When my three year old was little she only ever wore a long sleeve vest and 2.5 grobag from October to March.

Our twins are 1 year now and are in long sleeve vest and 2.5 too so I'm hoping it goes the same way too.

My boy is in a long sleeved vest, a babygrow and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag, he gets too cold and wakes up crying if I put him in anything less. The temp in his room is 18 degrees according to his monitor but I don’t think that’s altogether accurate, our house is old, draughty and cold.

A long sleeve vest on its own with the sleeping bag would probably be fine for your baby, you can always add another layer if you think she needs it.

Miriam101 · 18/10/2022 16:35

I go with a long sleeved vest if the room stays at around 19/20 but if it dips below 18 (which ours does at around 3-5am, when I realllly don't want to be woken up!) we tend to put trousers or at least shorts on him too as we've found his legs feel quite cold in the morning.

Miriam101 · 18/10/2022 16:36

Having said that if yours is a newborn (sorry, just seen) I would probably always err on the cautious (less clothing) side, not least b/c you're probably waking up multiple times anyway! (And obviously you have to be a bit more careful about the overheating stuff than when they're strapping two year olds)

HappyAsASandboy · 18/10/2022 17:38

I put my toddler in a long sleeved vest plus the sleeping bag. I think I'd do the same with a newborn and check their temperature during the night.

Merryclaire · 18/10/2022 18:48

Unless it’s below 17-18 degrees then just a babygro, no vest

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 18/10/2022 20:15

I do a vest, babygrow and 1 tog sleeping bag but the room is normally between 20 and 23. When it was warmer in the summer it was vest and sleeping bag only

ZuzuSusu · 18/10/2022 23:18

Long sleeved vest and socks inside bag. Keep some soft pants in hand, if her legs feel chilly during night feeds you can just slip them on with the diaper change.

I just found this handy chart on the Slumbersac website. Hope it helps. 😊

DS is in just a long sleeve vest and a 2.5 bag. It's around 19/20 degrees in his room. If you're checking to see if they feel cold, make sure you go by the temperature on their chest/back, not hands and feet which are generally cooler.

Boxofsockss · 19/10/2022 19:46

My baby is in a 2.5 tog now and a long sleeved vest. She’s having the lost cosiest sleeps lately. Her room is around 19/ 20 degrees

jewishmum · 19/10/2022 19:48

I had a 3 month NICU stay with DD and had lots of chats with midwives and nurses. I was told that if a baby is cold it will wake up and fuss. If a baby is overheated it won't wake up, which is the danger. Fyi.

Thanks everyone. I have got some long sleeve vests now, still haven't put her in the sleeping bag yet though, doesn't feel cold enough..

hi guys, i’m new to mumsnet!

my 6 month old is currently asleep and the room is apparently 22 degrees i’ve had the window open all day. for where i live it says it’s 15 degrees and it’s meant to get to 14-13 degrees later through the night.. i’m stressing on what to dress her in for bed i’ve already put her in a short sleeved vest and a 2.5 tog bag. i do have a 1.0 bag which she’s been using for when the room has been 24 degrees however she’s recently got a runny nose and sounds as if she’s getting a cold so i don’t know wether the temp is showing up correctly on the sleeping monitor (vtech) or if she’s just caught something. anyway would she be ok in this sleeping outfit or should i swap her to the 1.0 tog? ugh so stressed! first time mum here also

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 14/06/2025 22:47

I only use a 1 tog from like early May to late sept and then move to a 2.5 for the rest of the year

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 14/06/2025 22:48

My son is in a vest with his 1 tog

Fuzzypinetree · 15/06/2025 10:16

Either should be fine. Are you worried your baby will overheat in a short sleeved vest and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag? If your baby is cold, it will wake up and you'll know about it. Looking at the chart further up, that's more likely.

DD is 10 months and hates sleeping bags (used them with DS until he was about 2.5), so she's currently just sleeping in a short sleepsuit (she's unhappy with the long sleepsuits as well and always ends up oddly trapped with her legs...strange child...😂 ).

CandidFox · 02/11/2025 20:42

My little one is approaching 10 weeks old. We have purchased the padded sleep suits (2.5 tog) as he likes to wriggle and doesn’t get on well with sleeping bags.

my question is, is it safe to put a short sleeved vest, normal sleep suit then his togged sleep suit on during the colder nights?

the reason I ask , is I’m thinking the togged sleep suit would be warmer than the sleeping bag as this has arms. Worried about overheating!

thanks in advance for any advice!
