Not sure if newborns poo is normal

She is 18 days old and the last few days she's only having a poo once a day and really struggles to get it out, when it does come out it's runny and bright yellow and stinks, it smells quite acidic.
I'm combi feeding, mainly formula, she has a bottle a day of breast milk usually.

Does this poo sound normal? I'm just worried as it's become runny, not seedy or grainy anymore but quite smooth. Don't know if it's diarreah? And she doesn't seem to be going often enough

Yeah that sounds about right to me. Baby poo is minging. I wouldn't worry about how often she's pooing if she's pooing every day.

You might notice it's worse when you're eating certain foods.

Sounds normal to me. When my little one was a similar age I remember my partner keep commenting he could smell strong vinegar all the time..!

Newborn poo is pretty grim

Thank you. She's had a huge poonami (again) only going once a day but when she does my god, it's everywhere !!

I've attached a pic of her tummy, it looks big all the time, does it look abnormally big ?
I did have gestational diabetes and her AC was always on the 97th centile so would this be the reason it still appears big ?

Bumping

Her tummy does look big but if that's normal for her then I wouldn't worry too much. Baby poo changes a lot but if you feel she's uncomfortable it might be worth ringing your midwife if you're still under them or your health visitor x

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 18/10/2022 04:25

@spurs4ever thanks. This is the thing I can't remember if it was this big when born or if it's grew lol

Her stomach does seem rather large . I would make an appointment with your GP or Health Visitor as soon as . Really hope all is well .

LynetteScavo · 18/10/2022 06:30

Her tummy does look larger than it should to me. I'd definitely get her checked out for that reason.

I've never thought of baby poo as acidic. That does sound odd.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 18/10/2022 06:47

She does always seem unsettled aswell after a bottle. Always has wind/or reflux and always has hiccups too. She coughs when feeding. Screams randomly like she's calling out in pain after a feed.
I will make an appointment with the gp (mine are bloody useless though)

Can you not drop the bottle for a couple of days and see if she’s better ?

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 18/10/2022 07:05

@KangarooKenny I'm pumping but not making enough to ebf now ! I just about make enough for a bottle a day.
We already switched her formula from aptamil to kendamil and also switched bottles and it continues

I would refer to the health visitor rather than the GP in the first instance, babies are their bread n butter and therefore more likely to provide guidance

lawandgin · 18/10/2022 07:12

That sounds like it could be cmpa, op. She's pretty bloated. Speak to your HV or GP x

KangarooKenny · 18/10/2022 07:27

I would want a GP to see a tummy that shape.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 18/10/2022 07:35

I did look into cmpa but she doesn't vomit or have any rashes/hives etc. she occasionally spits up. Her main symptoms are more reflux ones... she also sneezes a lot.
I will book a gp appointment for today. Feel awful now I thought she just had a big belly !

My dd was like that from about 7 weeks old. Her tummy was really bloated like your little one, her poo was like a thick smooth milkshake texture and she had all the symptoms your little one has whilst feeding and after. She had cmpa which was diagnosed at 10 weeks

The poo is like milkshake and it goes all up her back it's a proper poonami style!

@thunderonlyhappenswhenits you don't always get rashes with cmpa, my dd didn't. And reflux usually has an underlying cause. GPs aren't great ime with baby feeding issues, but hopefully yours will be better.

Yeah my gp isn't the best since covid to be honest but I know the hv will only direct me to the gp anyway...
hopefully they take me seriously

Can I ask for anyones babies with cmpa - did they just constantly seem uncomfortable ? Like they was always straining, moving around, crying out randomly etc ?

Yes.

Although I will say, you are worrying about a lot of normal sounding things, like smooth poo, only once a day etc.

The feeding issues, reflux etc you should definitely talk to someone.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 18/10/2022 09:30

I thought newborns pooed more than once a day ?

They tend to do....
But on the other hand constipation is also normal for them. They can go up to 10 days without pooping.....
Do speak to a health professional 😉 always better safe than sorry

LynetteScavo · 18/10/2022 23:13

Did you manage to see someone today? I hope your baby is OK.
