Anyone with a newborn want to start a thread/WhatsApp? I'm finding my 4 week old so challenging and don't have a lot of friends with babies. Mine seems to cry a lot (posted this on different thread) but it's still hard to gauge levels of crying are normal... would be nice to know if others are in the same boat!

For context mine seems to have random outbursts of crying for no apparent reason whether it's during cuddles, during sleep, while breastfeeding or any other time. Seems to be gas/wind pain. Tried infacol and gripe water for gas pain but no joy yet...!

Also using swaddle, dummy, next me crib, sling, white noise...

Hi! Sorry, I don’t have a newborn now as my DD is 7 months now. But is there a chance your baby has colic? I know you’ve mentioned infacol. How long is your DC crying for?
my DD’s colic hit 2 weeks in and I didn’t know what had hit me. Then later down the line she’d cry a lot and I’d have to stand up and rock her until she went to sleep my poor back. It eventually stopped over time. However, we still need to use infacol now and again.
I hope your little one settles down soon🥰

So I think with colic there doesn't tend to be hiccups or vomiting which he has, so ruled it out! We're trying infacol before feeds anyway...

My nearly 5 month old was the same. Many a post made by me about it a few mo the ago!!

Infacol sometimes helped but not always. He was just so grumpy all the time. 5-8 weeks was the worst. I remember crying om the floor around 6 weeks not knowing what to do. Was always full of wind no matter how much I winded or used infacol.

It gradually got better on its own around 8 weeks. I know that doesn't help much now. I can only suggest winding during the feed, keepimg upright etc etc...
I found gripe water worked better than infacol actually For my little one.

I'm a FTM and baby boy is a bit older now but happy to chat or whatever if you want to. I'm not an expert but know how hard those weeks were
Xx

I have a 4 week old and an 18 month old.

My eldest would cry constantly and it turns out she had silent reflux. It was hard to spot because she wasn't spitting up. It turns out she had cows milk intolerance.

Speak to your GP about getting some gaviscon and if that doesn't work then omeprazole.

If you're breastfeeding, try eliminating cows milk from your diet and see if it makes a difference. It can take up to 2 weeks though for your system to clear it out.

Can you ask your Midwife or HVisitor to show you the massage movements for tummy pain. Helps with wind and can encourage pooing if that’s a problem.
It helps you to have something to try as well, it’s the feeling you’re unable to help them that’s the worst.

Bigslippers · 17/10/2022 00:35

Many many years since mine were babies but remember putting them across my knees and rubbing their backs when they had trapped wind and slowly jiggling my legs.
It will improve I promise but if course the tiredness makes magnifies it.
You’re doing amazing

Hiya, new here so not sure about different ways of msg/chatting but happy to chat and share experiences! I have a BF 6w/o who is also windy/fussy at times, was worse around 4 weeks and is now slowly starting to sleep longer stretches (1.5-3hrs) and nap better but there are/were days when he's super fussy at the breast and just wont settle for more than 5-10mins. BF counselor suggested feeding in laid back or lying down positions and allowing wind to pass between breasts and after feeds whilst in those positions rather than holding upright or putting down on back straight away and that does seem to help as there's less movement to agitate reflux and burps come more naturally..also giving some infacol and trying to get out lots during day to expose to daylight and get naps in carrycot or sling which seems to help too...early evenings seem to be worst, last night was crying furiously at breast for 30mins-1hr pulling away but also giving feeding cues!

This sounds like reflux, definitely speak to the gp about gaviscon for them. It won't hurt to try and if it helps it'll make life so much easier. Do you find they want to feed all. the. time? If so it'll almost definitely be reflux because the milk soothes it briefly before making it worse because they're full. It's a vicious circle. My first had reflux and colic and the first 10 weeks were HARD and then it just got easier without me noticing. Currently have an 8 week old with colic too 🙃 so I feel your pain!

I have this too with pulling away from
The breast crying, I can only imagine it's trapped wind/indigestion pain! Infacol seems to be doing the trick so far but could be a complete fluke. Early evenings has been bad for us as well although tbf it could be any time of the day he'll decide to have a scream!

Thank you - would be lovely to be able to message (not sure if there's a PM option on MN?)

And so nice to know it's not just my baby! X

When our DS was fussing at the bottle crying, it was reflux. Developed about week 6. More spit up, and more generally unhappy. GP prescribed a milk thickener, and we haven't looked back. Sorted out within days.

Hi OP. Just like others said, it could be colic or reflux. My DS is 4 months old now and the first 12 weeks were really rough on us, still didn’t manage to find out what was the actual problem. The DAY, literally the day he turned 12wo, it improves massively and just got to a point where he would only cry now when tired/hungry/windy. It DOES get better, I promise. Now we’re dealing with a 4 month regression that’s been going on for 5 weeks and hourly wakings every single night, I’m so exhausted I miss the newborn stage! Hang in there, in the meantime I will recommend probiotics like BioGaia, perhaps Infacol and colic drops when feeding. Won’t do harm and could potentially help your little one! They grow up so quick, once the original issue resolved itself, there is another one coming! Fingers crossed for you x
