13 month old vomiting randomly for weeks

Hi all,

Any help so majorly appreciated. My 13 MO son has been vomiting for about 4 weeks.

As background, he was 5 weeks premature, tube fed for 12 days, breastfed for 4 months and then formula fed until 11 months. he has always been a sicky baby, more than just posset, a bit more forceful but everyone said he would grow out of it.

He started on cows milk from formula 6 weeks ago, at about 11.5 months. He was fine for about 10 days and at 12 months started quite forcefully vomiting his whole stomach contents about twice a week. I’ve assumed the two aren’t related as he was on three bottles a day so tons of milk stayed down.

This has ramped up majorly and he has been sick over 20 times this week. I’ve been to a&e twice and they’ve said he has reflux. He has been given anti-reflux medication. I don’t think this is right. I’ve cut out dairy and it doesn’t seem to make any difference, he had 4oz oat milk tonight and was sick.

He had a vomiting bug last week and it’s got way worse since. We are at our wits end. My husband thinks he has a blockage or a tumour. He is quite distressed generally and not himself. It seems like he’s in pain. He can’t seem to handle volume of food and fluid since then? I can’t work it out.

Any guidance or help would be so great. We are really struggling. It’s massively impacting sleep and mood. So much.

Thank you xx

Are you sure they've recovered from the sickness bug? Sometimes the nastier ones can last for a couple.of weeks and leave you very sensitive afterwards.

I'd go with offering little and often and try to get a GP appointment

Hi,

im currently have the same problem with my 17 month old! He’s vomited everyday for three weeks now. He seems the same very lethargic and not him normal self at all!! Did you ever find out what the problem was? It’s breaking my heart been to the doctors twice one said constipation and the other reflux neither have helped.

Hello!

We tried absolutely everything and nothing seemed to work, it just stopped on its own. It took about 6 weeks of a lot of sick and then just faded away - the sickness got less and less and one day it just stopped. He hasn’t been sick at all since, until yesterday but just once and he has a cold so was definitely linked to that.

It is soul destroying when you’re in the thick of it, but everything crossed that the same happens for you and it just goes of its own accord. In a&e they were only worried about dehydration and sufficient wet nappies/keeping milk and water down, so focus on that. They weren’t concerned about food at all as he is an okay weight. Fingers crossed for you! Xxx

Hi, my son is experiencing similar and doctors can’t get to bottom of it. It’s been over 3 weeks of being unable to hold down more than a few bites of food plus very lethargic. @Beccapal - did you get any answer to your little one’s vomiting?

Try having his ears checked. When my DD was a toddler she was vomiting randomly for a couple of weeks, the GP said it was viral and would pass but a couple of days later her eardrum ruptured and her ear started leaking yellow pus, it had obviously been the inner ear infection that had been making her feel disorientated and sick but she hadn't been rubbing or holding her ear so I had no idea.

My DS 2.5years old had the same.

He had tonsillitis with vomiting and the vomiting never went away. He suffered for 4 weeks. He couldn't keep any water or food. 10-15 times a day he vomited. At night every hour he would vomit. He was in pain and now we are on week five the vomiting has finally stopped!!

We been to A&E twice and the Gp twice. They all said the same thing Virus. Viral infections in children this year have been really bad. Nothing they can do or give him. They offered dyrolyte only and told us to just have patience. And not to worry about food! 4 weeks without proper food.
I am frustrated they would allow a 2.5year old to suffer for 4 weeks with severe vomiting with no investigations. What has the NHS come to!
At week 5 he has bad cough where he almost vomits he has become scared to cough and he surpasses his cough as to not vomit. It is so sad and breaks my heart. He has no fever and generally well. But that is not normal for anyone especially not a baby!

Hi, we actually found out my son is a coeliac and once starting a gluten free diet he’s completely back to his happy normal self, definitely worth asking for the test.
