Secular godparents?

I'd love for my DS to have godparents as he is an only child and we don't plan on having any more and want to build his support network (any tips on that appreciated)
But we don't want to christen him as we're not religious.
How have other people gone about this?
Can you have secular godparents? Would they be called something else? Would there be some sort of secular ceremony? Thanks!

I have no idea about an alternative type of godparent. The clue's in the name. Maybe a guardian? Godparents don't seem to be very involved anyway in my experience.

If you make a will you can nominate a guardian for your child if both parents die. But that's about it I think

We appointed "god"parents for our DD at her naming ceremony. The script we found through Google referred to them as guideparents. But it was just something we did in a function room, there was no one officiating or anything, it was just a nice alternative to a christening to welcome her into the family.

I've been to naming ceremonies, parties with a short reading from the parents and from the people they've chosen to be the godparent role.

I've heard them called guideparents and oddparents!

We had Humanist ceremonies for both DC, and they have Ungodly Parents.

We did exactly this! I asked my oldest friend to be DDs 'secular godmother' we didn't do a ceremony or reading or anything, no need I think. I just asked her :)
