Fused primary teeth.. a concern?

Hi,

my little one it 10m old, and his bottom four teeth have just come in fused, so like two big teeth. The dentist said this was rare but a cosmetic issue only, but upon further googling (I know, not healthy) it looks like fused teeth can be caused by lots of genetic disorders, and hormone inblanaces like Klinefelter syndrome. I’ve really gone down the rabbit hole and I’m feeling totally depressed about it, and so worried for him.

has anyone else had a case of fused teeth where there hasn’t been an underlying cause? I just can’t stop thinking why have they come out like this, and what’s happened to cause it 😿

if there are any dentists out there that have an option on this, I’d love to know!

DD1 has two teeth fused on one side. She's three now, bright as a button, hitting all her milestones. No one has ever suggested her teeth are anything other than a minor dental quirk. Our dentist said that fusion in baby teeth is quite common and doesn't usually have any larger implications. Usually the adult teeth aren't fused either, although I think the dentist will keep an eye to make sure her fused tooth falls out when it should, doesn't develop cavities because of the funny shape, etc.

Thank you so much for replying to this, I can’t tell you how helpful it is, as I’m going through a real panic at the moment. It’s great that they didn’t mention anything. My son is also hitting all his miltetones so I think I’ll focus on that. I just can’t get the why out of my mind and it’s causing me such anxiety!

Two of mine had this. One it was just the baby teeth were fused and the adult teeth were fine. The other, one of the adult teeth came through like it was only half a tooth. The dentist sorted it.

They're now in their late 20s/early 30s. One is a doctor and one is a teacher.

Hope that sets your mind at rest.

This is just so what I need to hear right now, I’ve really worked myself into a Google storm of anxiety and worry. It’s the hormone issue that worried me! It’s so great to hear that it’s just or at least can be just a dental anomaly!

was your dentist concerned at the time? Or did he just say it’s one of those things?

thank you xxx

DS had 2 fused teeth. The dentist said it just happens sometimes. The fused tooth has since fallen out and been replaced by 2 separate adult teeth. No other health issues!

Sprogonthetyne · 15/10/2022 16:38

Two of DD's teeth came in fused, apart from advising to be extra vigilant with brushing due to the shape, the dentist wasn't concerned at all. She's 3 now with no known health conditions.

asdadult · 15/10/2022 16:41

The dentist just said it was unusual and there wasn't google then so I took her word for it 😂😂😂. She got the other dentist in the practice to look for a 2nd opinion I think.

Dungareesandfreckles · 15/10/2022 17:03

I WISH sooo much I took people’d word for things more. I’d be a much happier and less stressed person!

I had a fused tooth as a child. I always thought it was cool. When it fell out only one grew back so I’ve always been missing one in the bottom row (which confused my orthodontist when it came to sorting my brace) but otherwise no negatives.

my ds2 also has one. The dentist said until it comes out and they can see what kind of root it has(single or double) they can’t say if it’s fusion or germination either way nothing to worry about.

My eldest DD had a fused tooth as a baby tooth. Adult teeth came through fine and no issues at all.

Underscore21 · 15/10/2022 17:31

I've seen lots of fused deciduous teeth in my professional career and from memory, I don't think any of those children had an underlying genetic condition. They were all fit and healthy.

Dungareesandfreckles · 15/10/2022 17:34

This message means so much, I’m having such a hard time with this I don’t know why it’s got me worrying about underlying conditions so much, maybe health anxiety which I’ve had before for a few things!
thank you so much x

Could I ask how the dentist sorted it?

OP, my DS had this too and his adult teeth have come in separately but one of them is very small and narrow. So I’m interested to know how this is fixed through orthodontics etc, if @asdadult can elaborate! Thank you

Weirdly my DD has this too but it’s her adult tooth that has come in fused when her baby teeth weren’t! So they’ve had the opposite issue.

AND to complete the picture, my MIL has one of these teeth as well! DH and his sibling do not. So it must be something genetic that has skipped a generation.

asdadult · 18/10/2022 21:15

They got veneers I think (it was a long time ago!)

GurlwiththeCurl · 18/10/2022 21:20

Our younger son had the four front teeth of the bottom set fused into two. His second set were perfect. He completed his MSc about then years ago.

Please don’t worry so much, OP!
