5 year old screaming in pain - vulva/vagina area

Kimya · 14/10/2022 20:46

My 5 year old daughter keeps having episodes of screaming in pain at night saying her privates are sore (yes she knows the anatomical names but this is what she is choosing to call them in this situation)

It doesn't look red or irritated, the pain seems to be around the vagina although she is complaining of "sore wees" and has now started saying her bottom hurts too. I haven't seen any sign of threadworms and no, there is no possibility of abuse.

It only seems to arise at night which is why I thought worms but as I say, I've seen no sign of them. I've no idea what to do to stop it as giving ibuprofen, sitting her in the bidet before bed, applying sudocrem don't seem to be helping.

Not rtft but I’d buy urine strips from Amazon and test for an infection. Give her worm treatment and apply sudocrem to vulva overnight. Covers most bases, go from there.

Threadworms- the crying at night is a very classic symptom

@Fuuuuuckit but seriously though, how common is it these days? I feel like I see it all the time on mn when the only time I ever heard of it as a kid was when we joking asked if someone had worms because they seemed extra hungry?! (Different, I know)

Who will admit in real life that their child has worms though?

OP from your first post I immediately thought worms as well. DD has had them twice (well same strain - the idiot pharmacist told me I didn't need to do a second dose unless she still had symptoms so 6 weeks later she had them again). Both times she was crying in pain. I only realised the first time after seeing them in her poo.

@mummyh2016 fair point. I'm just a bit alarmed and even less looking forward to DD starting nursery now 😳

CornishTiger · 15/10/2022 08:59

@mummyh2016 it’s true. People don’t talk about it. Schools send not letters but not threadworm letters. I’ve had to explain to heads why they need to be asking for reports and treating the same as they would nits.

They are rife in school children. 1 in 4 I think was what I last read and they can cause real disturbances.

The other issue is GP and pharmacists don’t press the need for follow up treatment. The initial tablet only deals with the live ones by removing their ability to absorb their energy so they Demi’s. The eggs aren’t deal with though. So they hatch and then you have the problem again. The follow up treatment deals with them just before they mature enough to produce eggs themselves.

Prispen used to be a good treatment it paralysed the little fuckers and the laxative in the formula expelled them. But it’s banned now

That's a lot of kids with worms but it doesn't surprise me. I work in a school - kids never wash their hands properly and then they're all over each other. I really think schools need to start talking about hygiene more as a thing - we hardly talk about it at all.

I've had it twice in 4 years and both times initially I had pain in my vagina region too. Always worse at night and actually quite excruciating.

Completely agree, I couldn't decide when DD had it whether to report it to the school or not. I didn't in the end. This week I've had a text to say there's nits in the class. Why are they so hot on nits but not worms!
Worms aren't spoken about, we all know what the signs of nits are. Whereas it took 2 nights of a distraught child before I realised she had worms and that was only because I happened to look in the toilet bowl.

CornishTiger · 15/10/2022 09:21

The other issue is often the worms just aren’t seen. Some people never get them visible even if you go hunting. I always say to anyone who complains that their child is suddenly sleepwalking, up at night restless, wetting bed suddenly, or generally being a bit odd from their normal behaviour- worm them!

The other issue is I really don’t believe that one ovex that treats a child is the same dosage for a adult. I just can’t see how my little child can have the same dose as me and I’ll be free of them.

I frequently “overdose” myself and I treat a week interval and fortnightly. I only do this due to the lifecycle of worms. However if you are trying to get pregnant or are pregnant you shouldn’t use OVEX as it has had small studies showing some issues with pregnant rats. ( can’t remember exactly what now).

I was riddled with worms as a child and throughout my adult life have had frequent episodes of then no matter what I do.

CornishTiger · 15/10/2022 09:22

@ILoveMonday I think treatments should be free to school staff. You are right about hand washing!

When I told my DSis about it she was horrified, she said none of her kids had had them. But where I live, it's much more readily discussed amongst the school mums.

parsniiips · 15/10/2022 09:25

I've not read the full thread so apologies if this has come up, but what kind of soap/bubble baths etc do you use?

Heavily perfumed or cheap stuff that comes in gift sets can cause a lot of irritation especially for young/sensitive skin.

Maybe try using Simple or Sanex products for a while?

This, always worm them. It properly does my head in when people start fucking about with torches and shit.

I wormed my kids regularly when they were younger. Like I do the cat. At least keep the stuff in the cupboard ready to dose them at the first sign.

This, why we are so good at treating out pets for worms but so bad at treating our children I don't know.

PinkSyCo · 15/10/2022 10:49

Your child is in severe pain. Take the poor kid to the doctor ffs!

I've asked before and always get "I don't want to give my precious child medication they don't need if there is no proof they need it" no but these people would rather shine a touch up their precious offsprings backside while they're asleep.

They're worms, they don't live long, they don't evolve so medications no longer work. They're irritating little fuckers that cause a kid distress that isn't needed.

Worm them. Job done.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 15/10/2022 10:57

If not worms is she wearing pyjamas that are too tight / have you changed washing powder or fabric conditioner /using scented toilet paper?
Any of these can be an irritant.

She isn't having bubble baths at the moment, she has a broken arm.

Well we haven't had any crying tonight but she said before bed that she was itchy rather than sore... worms hypothesis seems reasonable at this point. I've got some ovex.

OP posts:
MarshmallowMadness · 15/10/2022 22:32

So has she had the ovex? She needs it ASAP.

Bohoboo · 15/10/2022 22:38

My daughter had similar and we got her checked out but no infection. Turned out she cant wear knickers with a seam in the gusset. We initially used an emollient cream which seemed to soothe it but we spent many nights putting lots of cream on and with her very uncomfortable. Since we changed her knickers she has had no issues at all - we are now many years on and still in no seam knickers!! M and S do them as do Primark.

Ah ok.

Just a thought.

Last year my friends daughter was regularly crying out in pain and saying her private area hurt.

It turned out to be all the cheap Christmas gift set products and bath bombs she had been using up.

It was always nighttime after having a shower or bath. There was no redness or obvious signs of skin irritation but it had really upset her ph balance.

After stopping using the crap stuff and using sensitive products it all stopped.

Kimya · 16/10/2022 10:16

We gave her (and us) the Ovex last night. Bedding is in the wash and I've made sure her nails are short and told her not to put fingers in her mouth so here's hoping.

We did manage a doctor's appointment yesterday pm, he did a dipstick test that was clear so we don't think it's a UTI though he said to go back if it persists. He agreed with trying the Ovex especially given she's mentioner her bottom being a bit itchy.

@parsniiips I've heard the bath bombs and bubble bath can irritate skin and especially delicate areas like that. Even when she's not in a pot, she tends to shower rather than bath but I agree some products can be full of rubbish and try to be careful what goes in there.

I have to be honest I don’t blame the poster . I have taken my daughter for the same symptoms to the doctor multiple times to always be told multiple times that she isn’t wiping properly and they are not interested in doing further tests. This is the first time I’ve heard of the possibility of worms and I hope that worm treatment fixes it because the doctors don’t have time or patience to attempt investigation because they are so tightly squeeze when it comes to funding and exhausted from long hours. It’s horrible listening to your child screaming in pain ever night and feelings like no one cares or believes you and you still have to send your child into school with zero sleep or you get a fine you can’t afford .

@BlueIris111 this thread is 2 years old I would hope by now the issue is long rectified

Poor girl! Don't attempt to diagnose it yourself. If she's screaming in pain you need to take her to doctor as an absolute priority!
