Talk to me about threadworms…

So my 2 year old I’m pretty sure has it (saw what looked like a teeny tiny maggot on her bottom last night as she was complaining it was really itchy, wiped it away and convinced myself that I was tired and it must have been a bit of tissue… then did the Googling and realised it was probably threadworm) and it’s really freaked me out!

So I had never heard of it before and all the websites I have seen including the NHS one, don’t actually answer some of the questions I have, so hoping lovely mumsnetters may be able to help, so here goes…

  1. I keep reading about children scratching their bottoms and transferring the eggs to the mouth which get ingested and then hatch into worms in the intestine but what happens to the eggs that stay on the bottom if no scratching takes place?? Get wiped away at toilet time or hatch on the bottom?? Or the eggs that end up elsewhere, do they still hatch in your home within the 2 week period?
  2. So much talk about washing all bedding, but can the eggs escape from a nappy??
  3. I have read I should bath her in the morning and wash her bottom, does the water kill the eggs? Or do you just hope they wash away in the bath and not cling to another part of their body?
  4. I have washed everything I can think of that she touched yesterday and quarantined loads of cuddly toys that I can’t wash, but there are websites saying you need to wash everything on a really hot wash to kill the eggs, then people saying just go around with a damp cloth on surfaces, this confuses me, how do these eggs die? Damp cloth or extreme boiling??
  5. How long do worms survive outside the body?
  6. I am breastfeeding and can’t take the tablet, what on earth am I to do? Have them forever if I catch it?
  7. How long after the tablet will the worms die?
  8. Will I ever get my sanity back or will I be forever paranoid about invisible eggs???!!!

Thanks from a freaked out mum!

We’ve had threadworms (or “bum worms” as the kids like to say) a couple of times. We all had the medication, washed the bedsheets and that was about it. Did the job. Try not to stress too much - they’re definitely gross but the medication is amazing and the worst we got was itchy bums at midnight!

Just reread your message and saw about the breastfeeding - kids once had them while I was breastfeeding too - I didn’t have the meds but was still fine. Just made sure to very very thoroughly wash my hands and the kids hands and chopped our nails right down.

Thank you for your reply, i’m irrationally paranoid about the whole thing.
If I do catch/have caught them I don’t know how I will get rid of them until I stop bf. And I don’t want the baby to suffer with them until 2years old..!
Argh! Children’s illnesses… 🤦‍♀️

It’s fine to take the medication while breast feeding

www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/threadworms/

Make sure everyone over the age of 2 is treated again after 2 weeks. If you have any playdoh at home chuck it out and get some more in 2 weeks.

Echoing the advice of @Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas. I took the medication whilst breastfeeding and it was totally fine. We all then took another dose in 2 weeks as it killed the cycle completely of any new eggs. You have my sympathies, they really are horrible!

The GP can prescribe it from 6 months - 2 year olds, if I am completely honest I just gave my then 8 month old a dose of Ovex too.

Purplehonesty2 · 12/10/2022 20:42

We all took the meds and again in 2 weeks to catch any that might have hatched since.

I washed all the bedding and towels, teddies.

Washing bum in the morning - right this is because in the night they come out onto your bum and lay eggs in a sticky goo. So you wash that away so little hands can't scratch it and soread them.

Clean pjs every night with pants underneath and wet wipes at toilet.

They soon go away but the itching is horrible! I caught them once and the dc twice. Nursery I think. 🤢

I’m in the same boat now. My children have got it and so have me and my husband. My kids have been great not itching etc. I’ve done everything nhs suggests, treating us with ovex and all the housework you can think of and hoovering etc washed all our bedding and tumble dried it all, toys all cleaned even the Lego! We made it into a fun game of washing them! Nails cut short and hand washing on tap! , but now I’m seeing posts saying to wash it on 60 degrees but my washer takes 5 hours to do that!!! So I’ve done everything on 40 and dried it all! Am I being crazy in thinking now I have to rewaash everything on 60?
