Worried , am I over exaggerating?

Just looking for advice please on my new smelly rug! Not sure if I’m over exaggerating and being silly. My daughter is 9 months, and is doing really well with her crawling and is very mobile! We wanted to order a new rug for comfort and cleanliness ( our old one was ruined! ) so we ordered a new one. It’s huge so it covers the whole front room. Just received it today, rolled it out and put it down and I noticed a real chemical smell coming off it? I’ve tried googling ( bad idea ) and it’s coming up with all sorts how it’s bad to breathe in ect we’ve got windows open airing it out currently. I’m worried to put baby girl down to crawl on there? I worry about the chemicals / fibers! Never really thought about it when I ordered it. Am I being silly? Should I just let it air out for a day or two and let her crawl around on it? We’ve currently got duvet covers over it so she can still crawl about.
Any body else noticed a chemical smell on their new rugs? Husband thinks I’m being ridiculous , I don’t know haha.

Where was it from? I know some places do treat carpets/rugs with chemicals when made and it may say in the description if they used them.

I would air it out and use it myself personally

Thankyou for the reply, the rug is from Argos. I’ve tried having a look but no information on what they use to treat it, my partner thinks it could be the plastic they use to wrap it? I’m not sure. I’ve got windows open at the moment giving it a good air out. Just smells so strong I’ve never known anything like it. I’ve had new rugs / carpets before and I don’t remember them smelling this bad x

I would have thought if its argos they wouldn't use chemicals. It could well be the plastic. Some of that stuff stinks!

I would air out and see if its still as strong after that, but it is probably fine for baby -in my opinion x

Thankyou for reassuring me. I’m gonna let it air out for a day or two and see how it’s smelling after. I’ll hoover a few times also!

Have you got any way you could put it outside to air it out?

Tinks95 · 10/10/2022 18:09

MsChatterbox Good idea, some fresh air could help the smell. I’ll see how the smell is in the morning if its still bad I’ll hang it over some chairs in the garden weather permitting!

Sunlight is good for eradicating smells. Can you leave it outside on the washing line?

Tinks95 · 11/10/2022 08:44

Nice weather here today, so I’m gonna get it outside to air out, woke up this morning and the smell is still really potent. Not sure if it’ll hang on the line as it’s a heavy one , but I can try! If not I’ve got my table and chairs I can place it on. Thankyou for your replies guys!

I don’t think you are being silly at all. Very sensible. We have so many chemicals in our every day lives that it is easy to become complacent but babies are so small and fragile that it is really worth being cautious. I switched to non toxic everything when my children were crawling, they touch literally everything.

Tinks95 · 11/10/2022 10:21

Yeah for sure! It’s nice to hear I’m not being silly. Thankyou. It is hard to avoid chemicals they seem to be everywhere! I try my best like for example with cleaning I use natural products , it’s definitely worth doing gives me peace of mine knowing I’m doing all I can 😊
