Potty training

So ds (27 months) started potty training just under two months ago. He told me he didn't want to wear his nappy anymore and said it was 'yucky' and would get really upset when I tried to put it on.

So, switched to pants straight away and he's taken to it really well. We've had a stretch of 7 days accident free within this time and most days he had no accidents/one accident.

The last few days the accidents have really picked up, yesterday he went through 4 changes of trousers at nursery and 2 afterwards.

Is this normal? Is it normal to almost regress? Any ideas as to why?

First child so I'm not used to what's normal/what's not! Thanks for any advice 😊

Its normal.

He was probably too busy enjoying himself but the nursery should be checking to see if he needs a wee more.

Maybe try pull ups for nursery?

Completely normal . My three year old occasionally has accidents ( sometimes a few a day for a few days and then we won’t have one for months ).

Also worth saying that my son was potty trained at home for months before he was “100%” potty trained at nursery. He was even NIGHT potty trained before he was accident free at nursery . Our nursery calls it fear of missing out but I think it’s also that they don’t see the signs like I would .

Yep, there's a honeymoon period where they're pleased with themselves for doing it, get lots of praise then it all peters out and they can't be bothered any more.

I don't think there's an easy answer, it's just perseverance (and washing). I wouldn't put him in pull ups, that's just a nappy with elastic sides!

Lots of praise for a dry day. I used to get Dd to help clear up after an accident so she associated it with less play - wipe floor, put stuff in washing machine etc. With the message that it's more boring and takes longer to wet yourself than go to the loo.

Yes normal. Completely agree with the honeymoon phase mentioned above, that's exactly what happened to us.

DD3 trained at 2y4mos and was doing so well and then got bored of it, many accidents at nursery and the playground. We tried for a few months to help her improve with all the different advice but nothing worked in the long term. We ended up putting her back in pull-ups 6 months after initially potty training her as we had a new baby and couldn't deal with all the laundry. (She still pooed consistently in the potty but pee she would not bother)

3 months on, she's now 3y1mo and we've told her she's old enough to learn this important new skill and we will be trying on the potty every time we leave the house, come home, wake up or go for nap (in addition to when she needs to go, or when we ask her to go because it's been awhile/she's doing the peepee dance). We are keeping her in pullups for now but emphasize keeping the pull-ups dry.

The pull-ups gave everyone a break from the frustration and she's now starting to take pride in going by herself and learning this new skill that big kids and adults need to know. Time will tell, she's a bright girl I know she'll get there when she's ready but in the meantime I'd say pull-ups are a fine option if it works for your family.
