Soaking through night nappy

DS is 12 weeks old and is already almost put of size 0-3 months clothes. He's due to be weighed next week by the HV so not entirely sure of his weight. He fits size 2 nappies but has been soaking through them at night. I tried size up but they are just too big for him and leak.

He has a big feed before going down for beats but he's quite hard to get down to sleep so I don't change his nappy. He then feeds 1-2 times during the night. I'm reluctant to change his nappy during the night if its not a poo as he'll be awake for an hour or so. Any suggestions as to what to do?

Upsize his vests and sleepsuits so that they aren’t squishing the nappy when it’s full! I found this helped mine!

SBAM · 07/10/2022 21:10

Yes, make sure his nappies aren’t compressed as that causes leaks. And I used to change mine when they woke in the night before the feed, so they’d get drowsy again when feeding.
I would also go up a nappy size for nighttime but leave them in their usual size for daytime for a few weeks when they were on the cusp of changing sizes.

Yes!

I have a similar problem…

My 8 week old boy is 5.6kg and wears size 2 pampers or size 3 mamia (aldi).

The mamia hold much more so I use those overnight.

However I don’t like to leave him in full nappy so I usually change him at 12/1am feed and 5am feed (he usually poos at this time.) I don’t change at 3am feed.

Its frustrating as the dry night nappy’s start at size 3 / 6kg !!

This happened both of mine until they were 2! The only thing that worked was adding a “booster” to the nappy. You can get cloth boosters for cloth night nappies but I just used disposable organic cotton maternity pads. Worked perfectly every time!

ChloMorgs1 · 07/10/2022 21:21

Have you tried + size nappies for nighttime?

tortiecat · 07/10/2022 21:29

Try a reusable nappy booster and/or waterproof cover with a disposable nappy - this worked for our heavy wetter DS before he was big enough for pull up pants.

PorridgePowered · 07/10/2022 21:32

I change him half way through the feed. That way he's not super hungry so doesn't fuss too much and not at the end when you just want to go back to sleep! Sometimes I'm temped to leave him and risk it, but changing a nappy is so much less faff than changing the clothing and bedding if he does soak through. Hopefully just a phase. 😁

Maybe time to move up a nappy size? I find the weight guides on them are way out. My son is 18m, he weighs about 12kg and has been in size 5 nappies for probably close to a year yet the guide on the packet says size 5 is for 11-15kg. So fair enough the right fit now but he didn't weigh this much a year ago!

With my daughter I found the nappy sizes matched up with when she fit clothes sizes so

Newborn size 1
0-3 size 2
3-6 size 3

Then size 4 from that point until potty training.

A long way to say try moving up a size! I always found that when I moved up it seemed giant for approx 5 secs and then going back to the smaller size seemed tiny!

Mamabear04 · 07/10/2022 21:52

Thanks for all your tips! Size 3 nappies are just too big round his legs. Although he's a big lad he has a slim waste and skinny legs so the larger nappy size is physically too big!

@Matilda1981 thanks for the tips of his clothing. He is definitely almost out of 0-3 so will look out the 3-6 month baby grows and vests!

Also been using biodegradable nappies kit and kin...maybe I need to try the aldi ones for night time? I have just been trying to use less plastic. @ChloMorgs1 what plus size brand would you recommend?

@tortiecat would there be enough room for a reusable nappy booster with the disposable nappy?

@PorridgePowered I don't want to take him off mid feed because he can struggle to latch when tired because of a small tongue tie. I've had mastitis twice already because I've taken him off to see to my older child and it's just not worth it!

@Sunnydayz does your LO not wake up getting their nappy changed? DS takes about an hour to get back to sleep!

Should say that DS doesn't seem to mind soaking through and it's not until morning I realise because he sleeps so well! It's always his baby grow and inside of sleeping bag that's wet, it never gets through to the other side so I never know until morning. Maybe I'm just a bad mum and should check! He's never had nappy rash or anything though...

Have you tried one nappy on top of the other? DD had a double nappy at night for ages to stop leaks

My DS is 11 weeks and we’ve been using size 3 for 2 or 3 weeks, he does have fat legs though. Could you use a size 2 with a size 3 over the top to catch any leaky bits?

ChloMorgs1 · 07/10/2022 22:44

They only do "+ nappies" in Size 4 or above, apologies.

SamanthaVimes · 07/10/2022 22:47

Also I do 1 change in the night before a feed. He does wake up having his nappy changed but he’s awake anyway iyswim? Then boob until he’s sleepy again

NGCO · 07/10/2022 22:50

I change my lo during the or else she would be soaked through too

tortiecat · 07/10/2022 23:27

@Mamabear04 see www.thenappylady.co.uk/news/how-to-stop-disposable-nappies-leaking.html

tortiecat · 07/10/2022 23:31

I used both as we use reusable nappies part-time and had boosters and covers available, I know the Nappy Lady link says just boosting should be fine but I found the waterproof cover stopped any leaks onto DS's bag.

As soon as DS got to size 4 and we could use disposable pull-ups we switched to those in 4+ (saw that on another Mumsnet thread), the wider waistband and absorbency meant no more boosting needed.

Sunnydayz · 08/10/2022 05:22

He does wake up. I feed him then change him then feed back to sleep. He usually goes back to sleep quickly enough, but the whole episode, feed-change-feed-back to sleep, usually takes an hour.

Tonight I haven’t changed him since 8pm. He’s slept really soundly all night, gone straight back to sleep after feeds and not poo’d yet, although he’s starting to fidget and make squeaky noises so I think a poo is imminent.

I think those few leaks had me a bit OTT with the night time nappy changes so I might relax a bit and see how it goes.

My guy doesn’t seem to mind a wet nappy or soaked clothing either, he continues to sleep and not fuss about it, so I’m not aware until I pick him up!
