6 month old doesn't 'react' to new flavours

FTM here and recently started weaning. DS has taken to it like a duck to water and is wolfing his food down, but I've noticed that he doesn't react to new flavours the way I've seen other babies react.

He seems to enjoy the food (opens his mouth wide, reaches for it, eats it off the bib), but doesn't pull any faces, doesn't spit any out and doesn't even seem to register that we've given him something new. I even tried him with some mashed pear that I tasted and thought was a bit tart, and he didn't react at all apart from eating the lot 😂

I guess I'm just wondering if it's normal, if he just happens to like everything we've given him, or whether there might be something wrong with his taste buds? Probably sounds like a silly question but I can't stop thinking about it! 🙈

It’s normal! Mine used to eat anything from curry to tangerines with no response besides chomp chomp chomp. The reactions and opinions came later.

Mine were like this as well, at 6+ months they ate anything you gave them including curry, fish, vegetables...

Now at 5 and 7 they are definitely more picky...

Yep mine reacted the same to broccoli as he did to sweet food like fruit. The excited reactions came with things like ice cream and chocolate but he didn’t get to try those delights until he was much older. It’s great he is so interested in food though!

When my DD was 6 months she ate half a lemon and didn't flinch. She also ate spicy curry off my plate and didn't notice either. I think it's normal for them to sort of just experience the flavours without comment to begin with.

scrivette · 06/10/2022 20:33

My DC were like this - ate anything no matter what it was (even if it wasn't supposed to be edible).

They both got very fussy at about age 5 though.

Thanks for your responses everyone! Makes me feel much better. I was starting to convince myself he'd been born without taste buds 😂🙈

Mine was the same! I don't think its anything, in particular, to worry about but if you still have residual worry I'd check out this site babyvillage.org/, I used it to ask all my random questions so I wouldn't obsess over things when I had my first child

Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 06/10/2022 21:13

Same here - the reactions you've seen are posted because of the reaction. Doesn't mean all babies do that. When I gave DD a lemon wedge she didn't even flinch, and went back for more.

As an aside, when young babies spit it's not because they don't like the food. It's usually because they've put more in their mouth than they can handle, or can't manage the texture or chew it properly. It's actually considered an important (and life saving!) skill in learning to eat so when yours does start to spit try not to worry about it!

Hahaha I was sure my boys taste buds were broken😂he was exactly the same🙈he's 15 month and still eats anything and everything. Haven't found a food he doesn't like..::.long may it continue😂

Calphurnia88 · 07/10/2022 20:14

We've just started weaning and my DS isn't reacting much either.

His initial expression was one of confusion (as in... WTF is this mum) but now he's got the concept of eating he eats it without reacting too much. He only reacts if I smile at him, which is pretty normal for him.

Johnnysgirl · 07/10/2022 20:18

They covered this in Child of our Time, didn't they? Apparently some of us are super tasters; very sensitive to strong flavours and others don't react much at all.
They had a baby sucking a lemon without flinching 😂

grosgirl · 07/10/2022 20:24

My friend’s DS was like this and then became very picky from about 2 yrs old. I had the opposite experience; had a nightmare weaning and now have a 5 year old who literally eats anything (and everything 😂)
