Shorty wetsuit for swimming lessons (2yo)

Good idea or not? The pool is apparently quite cold (we haven't been yet). We already have a shorty wetsuit, but would that just get in the way? Should we shell out for one or those wrap ones with no arms or legs?

TIA!

It'll make the kid much more buoyant so they'll struggle later without it. I'm sure the teachers are used to not letting the kids get cold

I used a shorty wetsuit for my daughter until she turned 3years old. It kept her warmer and meant we could stay in the pool and have fun for longer. She's 4 now and swims like a fish so it hasn't hampered her ability at all. I would definitely recommend it.

wetsuits have buoyancy
ask the provider.

unless the water is less than 22 degrees I wouldn't bother for a 20 min lesson. it even might encourage dc to kick more in the water.

Thanks all.

The lesson is 30 mins but I thought we'd probably head to the splash pool afterwards.

Good shout to ask the providers

For a 2yo, after a 30min lesson (whichbis long for that age) theyvprobably won't have the energy to do the splashpool, maybe take their lead on how tired they are.

Our pool says normal swimsuits for lessons only, no extra buoyancy or anything

BillHadersLeftEye · 06/10/2022 07:28

Definitely not for lessons.
30 mins is more than enough for a 2 year old in cool water.

It depends on the child. DD1 had one at that age. Even with the wet suit and having her lessons in a warmer teaching pool, she would emerge after 30 mins with blue lips. She has always been a very skinny child who gets cold easily. She is 8yo now and it didn't hamper her swimming progress at all - she was swimming 10m unaided at 3.5yo, then passed her trial and joined a swim club at 5.5yo, being placed in a class with 7 and 8 yos. She still comes out of her training sessions shivering now and spends a long time in the shower afterwards warming up again, although she no longer wears a wet suit of course!
DD2 didn't wear them once past the baby stage as she is a more 'average' build and doesn't feel the cold in the same way. She has hit her swimming milestones/passed levels at roughly the same ages as her sister. At the opposite end of the scale, I have seen one very slim child in a neoprene vest for warmth in level 5 previously and it didn't cause him any issues.
