What foods to reduce constipation in toddler?

2yo DD has been suffering recently with constipation. We’ve spoken to the nurse and have a few things to try but I was wondering more long term what foods are good to prevent it in the future and any foods were should reduce / avoid?

She’s recently become a bit more fussy with food so looking for new ideas!

Dried fruit is good, dried apricots went down well with my DD when she was having trouble with constipation.
In general, keep water/fluid intake up and plenty of whole fruit and veg, weetabix or readybrek are good for fibre intake too.

Have a look at the ERIC website.

Agreed re the above - fruit & veg etc. My DD was diagnosed with constipation & GP prescribed Laxido (stool softener). Due to constipation she couldn't tell when she needed the loo (I didn't realise what constipation was, I thought it meant that you couldn't go at all for several days but I was wrong) so at age 4 she was having accidents multiple times a day every day. Dr said plenty of fluids and also (to my surprise) squash or anything that wasn't plain water, because apparently plain water goes through your system very quickly due to osmosis but if it's got something in it e.g. squash it has more chance of reaching the bowel.

Sweet potatoes, mashed, baked or fries.

Prunes, pears and lentils always worked with my DC.

AdriannaP · 04/10/2022 19:19

Kiwi, prunes and plums

lots and lots of water!

Ella prune pouches. Weetabix.

AlwaysPan1ck1ng · 04/10/2022 19:27

Mine are 12 and 7 so its been a while but I used to give them (tinned) broken mandarin segments in SYRUP (the syrup is important)

No complaints and poops the next day

IamChipmunk · 04/10/2022 19:38

Same as pp Ella's Kitchen prune pouches also the pear ones (although not quite as effective!)
Aldi now do a prune pouch!

caringcarer · 04/10/2022 19:43

Stewed apple, fresh fruit juice orange with little bits in.

DS was prescribed lactulose at the start of the year and has been off it for about four months now.

We bulk buy Aldi prune pouches when they're available. Also given up completely on the "water only" rule as getting fluids into him was the main thing. Hugh fibre cereals. Apparently bananas can make it worse so we avoid them.

Olive oil either by the spoonful or drizzled onto things - works a treat !

SamanthaVimes · 04/10/2022 20:09

Thanks for the tips everyone! I’ve got some prune pouches from Tesco and some pears and I’m sure I’ve got weetabix in the back of the cupboard somewhere.

I’ll definitely try to be more proactive with getting drinks in her as I think this is definitely a contributor!

This is a bit out there, and only know it because I used to live in China, but dragon fruit!

Mamabear04 · 04/10/2022 20:30

Pears and wheatabix but also running around and exercise help with constipation too, not just diet!

SamanthaVimes · 04/10/2022 21:29

@BarbaraVineFan DD is actually half Chinese and spends lots of time with my in laws so I’ll mention it to them, I’m sure they’d be on board

@Mamabear04 she does lots of running about but we’ve got forest school and softplay tomorrow so will be extra active, hopefully that will help!
