Reality vs make believe?

What do you tell your children when it comes to them believing make believe. For example DC 4 is currently into superhero’s and Spider-Man and asks things like when can she be Spider-Man and how old is he and where does he live etc. It feels better to go with the truth ie. Spider-Man is a made up character but then I wonder where do you draw the line? The other thing is the spider man obsession has been very useful with behaviour and food, because obviously spidey loves vegetables and is really helpful and kind to his mum, and whenever she gets nervous she asks if spidey would do it or like it and then she has a go because he would. She’s at that age where she is asking a million questions a day so the brush off doesn’t work but I feel I need to pick a route and stick with it. (Except for Santa because he’s real until she tells me he isn’t!)

I think I’d just go with it, why not? It’s fun to blur the lines between fiction and reality when you’re a kid.

Answer with what you know about Spider-Man and encourage her to imagine other details. Like what would be the perfect Spider-Man house? Would he live really high up with a net/trampoline for a bed? He’d probably need a great sewing room for fixing his costume when it rips, etc. If you want to bring more reality into it you could watch videos of rock climbers or even take her to kids classes if that’s an option.

She might like this video - it’s is a really cool sport practiced where I live. Teams of about 50 people build human towers and the people who climb to the top are your daughter’s age:

Or talk about spiders, monkeys and other animals that climb and jump like Spider-Man.
