My DS 2 years old is due to have a hydrocyle Op this month for a communicating hydrocyle. I wondered if anyone has gone through this and if anyone can advise how the Op went and was the post op recovery was like for the little ones? Thank you 😊

Yes! Mine had the op at 7.5 mos old. Hydrocele + hernia. Arrived at 7am. Home early afternoon. Baby was playing normally next day. Took Tylenol first day only. No signs of discomfort so didn't give it again. Baby is totally fine. No concerns.
So glad I opted for surgery rather than wait and see as was my option.
I understand your stress. I was a bit of a mess day before and day of.

Thank you SO much for your reply. This is so good to know! How was the wound after surgery? Did Nappies cause an issue at all and I heard that they advise to not bath for a few days too? Really pleased to hear you had such a positive experience and am so grateful to you for sharing! Thank you x

No issues at all. Just sponge bath. Bandage had to be on for a bit. I honestly can't remember how long either. Just a week, I think. Scar right groin about 1". Was almost gone at 3 mos post. I was really surprised how well he did.
It's difficult making decisions for them, isn't it?
Stay in touch if you like and do let me know the outcome. ❤️

DS had this done 30-odd years ago. Hernia and hydrocele. I don't remember it as traumatic or him being in any particular pain so he must've been fine.

I hope all goes smoothly.

DS had a hydrocele and inguinal hernia op aged about 2.5yrs. We had watched and waited for about a year or so first.
Recovery was very simple, day case in hospital, Calpol for a few days. Very little scar which you couldn’t see at all after a few years. No issue with nappies.

it was quite a while ago (15 yrs ish) but it was very straight forward.

my only tip is to get a book out of the library for your DS on operations first that will explain magic cream, injection etc and that he will go to sleep. Then when he wakes up the operation will be over. Also talk about small chance of having to use gas. Might seem extreme but the hydrocele was the second op DS had and they were fine with the injection but the first one he had to have gas which he found traumatic. We very much found that talking about it first made it less stressful for him and us.

Good luck to you and your DS.

Thank you all so much for your responses I really appreciate it! It has really helped put my mind at ease a bit! That’s a fab idea about the books too for a bit of preparation for before the hospital. Thank you so much x

Did your DS have the surgery?

Can someone point me in the right direction for ingenuial hernia and hydrocele surgery please? It’s took a whole year for my baby boy to be diagnosed for this. NHS has a waiting list and private hospitals don’t want to do surgery because he’s under 3. I’m adamant he’s in pain and I need to get him this surgery asap.

My son had the same surgery around 18 months. The operation itself was quick, and he bounced back faster than I expected — a bit sore for a couple of days but back to normal play within a week. Just keep an eye on the incision site and follow the surgeon’s care instructions. Wishing your little one a smooth recovery!
