DS 15m has recently had an endoscopy and has only had a few diarrhoea nappies since. I was changing him and noticed his nappy was wet but had a few brown specks and wondering would this be anything to be worried about. I have included a picture for reference.

Thanks in advance 😀

Is that at the front or the back of his nappy?

Amall221 · 02/10/2022 22:34

It is at the back of his nappy. He has since had another one with diarrhoea with similar brown specks. I will attach another photo. Sorry in for the graphic pics🙈🙈

As in a colonoscopy? They mess the bowel right up for a while afterwards. My DS (20) has colitis and recently had a colonoscopy and he said the prep and procedure had messed him up for a couple of weeks. If you're concerned contact the paediatrician who ordered the scope or your GP.

Should add DS has had colitis for 3 yrs so has had a couple of colonoscopies and a sigmoidoscopy. I also had a sigmoidoscopy last year and it took a week for my bowels to get back to normal.

I will add a bit of context as to why I am so concerned. 6 days ago I noticed DS acting strange suddenly- retching , drooling and coughing. I had a gut feeling that he had swallowed something. Fast forward a few hours I took him to A&E where an X-ray revealed he had swallowed a lithium battery. It lodged in his oesophagus, which is why he had the endoscopy to remove it. The doctor informed me that DS saliva and the lithium in the battery caused a chemical reaction which in turn caused slight burns to his oesophagus. DS remained in hospital for 4 nights after removal and did not have bowel movements for 2 days (very unlike him) since his bowels have opened they have been constant diarrhoea but I have began to notice the specks in his nappies. It might be something to do with the change in his diet as he has been unable to eat solid foods due to the burn in his food pipe.

Anyways, thats just a bit of backstory so anyone who may have answers will understand my concerns. Thanks in advance.

Is this a serious post? Your child swallowed a battery and had a medical procedure to remove it and you're asking mumsnet for medical advice, without mentioning the battery first?!

You need to speak to a doctor. A real life one, not on mumsnet. I hope your little one feels better soon.

PinkButtercups · 02/10/2022 22:53

The first one looks like where poo hasn't been wiped properly.

I'm not an expert though.

Amall221 · 02/10/2022 22:54

Yes it is a serious post. We have just been discharged from the hospital which the doctors are content with his condition. I am asking if anyone has had similar experiences and if this would be a normal occurrence after something similar. Obviously if the problem persists I will return to seek further medical advice.

Your child swallowed a lithium battery? Christ. Yes I would go straight back to hospital.

Amall221 · 02/10/2022 23:11

We were visiting a family member and he somehow found a button battery, and then swallowed it. I would like to add we were in hospital for almost a week and they discharged us being happy with his progress. I am asking would these nappies be a normal side effect or having such a procedure.

I would imagine most of us would have no clue as it is quite an unusual situation. I would call the ward you were discharged from for advice.

Were you given open access back to the pediatrics department? If yes, I'd go back.

I wouldn't be taking any chances at all after the battery incident as it's an unknown. I would have thought many doctors wouldn't really know what to expect after a child swallows a battery as it's thankfully rare.

(As an aside, those little batteries really should be regulated to only be used inside things that can be screwed shut properly. And anyone visiting people using hearing aids should be aware that these batteries have to be changed quite frequently and often the users aren't aware of the dangers to children and leave them lying around. I showed DD one when she was a toddler and taught her that they were dangerous).

Agree. I was shocked to find out how many night lights used button batteries.

DS had two in his room that went straight into the bin.

Concerned with babies nappy. DS is 16m and is having trouble swallowing food. He can only eat pureed food and drink bottles which hasn’t always been the case. I’ve noticed him choke and vomit a few times on food and have since made an app with health visitor. However, Ive noticed a few dodgey nappies and am wondering from experience would it be of any concern or would anyone know if the two are linked? I will draw this to the attention of the health visitor at the appointment. I have included a pic which isnt too pleasant, apologies in advance 🙈🙈

For goodness sake. Your child is having difficulty eating and swallowing which he didn’t have before as he has a damaged oesophagus from ingesting a lithium battery. Is the hospital aware that he is still having difficulty? Instead of posting pictures of the contents of his nappies on here you should be speaking to the hospital without delay.

PinkButtercups · 07/11/2022 14:02

Agree with @AppleDumplingWithCustard HV shouldn't be your concern. You need to take him back over and yes his poo is very pale.
