Alcohol and having a baby

Hey guys. I have a 4 month old baby girl. I don't know what your thoughts are on drinking alcohol around baby. It goes without saying that you shouldn't become impaired, but I've been considering walking to a nearby restaurant and enjoying a glass of wine or beer with just me and baby. I'm afraid of being judged. Do you guys think this is acceptable or irresponsible?

Get someone else to watch your baby while you have a bit of time out for yourself. Don't take your baby to the pub Fgs.

sallyloveschips · 02/10/2022 15:05

Nope not at all. There's a vast difference between savouring one nice glass of wine and getting blackout drunk!

As long as you aren't driving and you're able to look after baby it's nobody else's business. You probably will get judged as there are a lot of nosey sad bastards out there but who cares what they think ey?

I often have a few glasses of wine when my dc are in bed...I need it!!!!

bakeoffsluzzy · 02/10/2022 15:08

I think it's fine and if that's how you want to spend a bit of time out then absolutely do it! I know I would if there was a decent pub within walking distance. You know your limits so just be sensible, and who cares what everyone else thinks, mums are judged regardless of their decision making Confused

What's wrong with taking a baby to the pub?! A newborn is a perfect pub companion. We spent the first few weeks of having a newborn having long pub lunches and I used to take baby to the pub to meet friends. It was excellent.

Why? There are loads of family friendly pubs around. What's the issue?

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/10/2022 15:14

I don’t think I’d ever go for a drink solo in the middle of the day. But if I went for a pub lunch with friends and wasn’t driving then I’d happily have a drink, maybe even 2, even if I had the DC with me.

She actually says restaurant, not pub.

NewYorkLassie · 02/10/2022 15:17

I occasionally had a glass of wine at the cafe in the park solo with the baby. Not sure I’d go inside an actual pub but then I probably wouldn’t do that alone without baby either.

DeeofDenmark · 02/10/2022 15:21

No problem with this at all and I’m not a big drinker.

OldTinHat · 02/10/2022 15:24

Go for it and enjoy it!

Marluuu · 02/10/2022 15:25

I don’t see any issues with that

Goldbar · 02/10/2022 15:37

There is absolutely no problem with taking a baby to a pub/restaurant and enjoying a glass of wine. Being drunk in charge of a child is obviously an issue (and illegal).

I'd make the most of being able to do this for the next few months as it will become harder when your child is on the move. Unfortunately most soft plays don't serve alcohol.

Heyahun · 02/10/2022 15:40

I do things like this all the time not sure why not bringing a baby to a pub is an issue tbh 🤣

Garman · 02/10/2022 15:51

Why don’t you just buy a bottle and have it at home?

ladygindiva · 02/10/2022 15:51

Nowt wrong in my opinion. DD1 was born at the start of a world cup and my team ( not England ) played the opening match and had a good run that tourno so she spent a fair bit of time as a newborn over those few weeks being bf in a pub while I had a shandy. She's fine . It was fun.

Because sometimes it's nice to get out of the house and be amongst other people after a day spent mostly alone with a baby. Avoids cabin fever.

I used to do this quite frequently as the background noise in the pub would send my stubborn non-sleeper right off to sleep. Much better than spending the evening hours in the house alone with a grousing baby.

20viona · 02/10/2022 16:14

It's absolutely fine to enjoy a glass of wine enjoy.

I'd be more worried about a Mom day drinking alone in a house than having a glass of wine with their lunch out and about. I think it's much easier to stick to one glass for a start for one day instead of it becoming endless open bottles in the fridge.

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2022 16:31

I would go and have a meal with a glass of wine.
Without food? I would rather have a coffee. Day drinking completely does me in.

WhiskersPete · 02/10/2022 16:39

That's the best age to take a baby to the pub as they just sleep. No chance with a toddler. Make the most of it.

ChildWontStopGrowing · 02/10/2022 17:14

A glass of wine is totally okay! Just be careful with nighttime - I think it applies to cosleeping, but there's a link between alcohol consumption and SIDS cases. Have a google if it applies to you

WithIcePlease · 02/10/2022 17:33

With DD2 4mo and DD1 4y, DH working away for a week. I got fed up, put us in a cab and went to a Chinese restaurant, had a meal (not the 4 mo obvs) and a couple of glasses of wine. It was a lovely evening 😊

One glass of wine or a single beer at home hardly constitutes as day drinking 😆 A glass of wine or beer with her dinner or before it is not a problem, projecting a bit to suggest that leads to constant bottles on the go in the fridge, it definitely doesn’t for most of us.

Abridget7 · 02/10/2022 19:27

I've done it many a time, absolutely fine and I'd never judge a mum sat having a glass of wine by herself with her baby. Jeezus we all know you've earned it! Make the most of it while you can. Much harder to do when they're toddlers.

Possibly projecting 😂😂. If I'd had wine in the house when my twins were 4 months old and had allowed myself to day drink, I think it would have been more than one occasional glass... I def feel that way now they're nearly 3
