Preparing SMA Anti Reflux Formula

Hi,

Our baby boy just moved on to anti-reflux formula yesterday and we're a little confused about the preparation of the bottles.

On the tin it says to leave boiled water cool for no more than 30mins, add the water into the bottle, cool the bottle of water under a cold tap until lukewarm and then add the scoops of formula.

Shouldn't the water still be relatively hot to kill any bacteria in the formula?

Also we're wondering how we could prepare a number of bottles in advance for night time or going out. Could we just put cooled boiled water into a bottle (apparently this will stay sterile for 24hrs) and add the formula during the night or when out when needed?

Thanks

The boiling water kills the bacteria. Then you leave it / help it to cool so it's drinkable for baby.

We tried the SMA anti reflux and I do remember the instructions being a bit different. If the powder goes into really hot water it clumps together and doesn't mix well. I found aptimal/cow and gate much easier to mix. But to answer your question, we made the next bottle after the last one was drunk, cooled quickly under a tap and stored in the back of the fridge. For going out i either made a fresh bottle just before we went if I knew it would be given within 2 hours of it being made or I put boiling water in a flask and made a bottle as and when.

It says different on the tin though, boil kettle, cool for 30 mins, add to bottle, run under cold tap until lukewarm...then add formula. Seems strange.

Yeah it's so confusing 😃 thanks for this. We noticed this yesterday too after putting it in warm water it got a few lumps. After storing in the fridge used you then heat it up before feeding?

You have to add this stuff to cool water because of the milk thickener in it. It goes funky if you don’t, hence the lumps. Normal NHS bottle making guidelines don’t apply. I used to use the perfect prep but add the powder last, not after the hot shot and it worked every time.
