Baby is covered head ti toe in eczema. I mean absolutely COVERED. GP said its just a really bad case of it - isn't concerned otherwise

He has been scratching all night long. Neither of us has slept. I THIBK WE HAVE HAD 1 HOUR TOTAL
I've tried aveno it's doing nothing. What can I do?

Sudocrem or E4/aqueous cream?

I would swear by aqueous cream for my eczema but check it's ok for little ones first, I don't need to use on my DC luckily

goldenochre · 27/09/2022 08:32

Have you tried getting a scratch sleeve? Its on Amazon, it worked for my DD- bed time bath, cream, then scratch sleeve and pjs.

But we needed steroids for really problem areas(where she scratched till it went kind of leathery). GP prescribed emovate. So its a combination of cream that works for your lo and this scratch sleeve.

Hope it goes alright for you. I understand lack of sleep because of the constant scratching. I wake up and tried to gently hold her hand to her sides to let the feeling go :(

Maybe check if you can use calamine lotion on them, too? I feel for your little one, it's the worst thing!

From my quick Google, calamine is fine for most babies. Aqueous, not necessarily so definitely research anything mentioned

My area of parenting expertise!

How old is baby?

Cetraben ointment.
Steroid ointment.

Laurappo · 27/09/2022 08:47

Thanks all ill go to the chemist and try these. I'm desperate. His poor face is coveted and he is so uncomfortable. @babysharksb1tch he is 4 months

You need to rule out cows milk allergy first of all. Eczema is often linked to allergies. Are you breastfeeding? If so, diary free diet or if bottle fed id jump straight to neocate if you are desperate.

Second, doctor needs to prescribe something for the worst parts. We had a nightmare with under the chin and got a steroid cream.

Third, doctor can prescribe antihistamine for the itching. This really helped us.

We also used to put some frozen peas in a plastic bag and hold them against the worst areas where our little one was itching. It's a vicious cycle, the more they scratch the more it itches.

It's really awful, I hope it clears up for you soon. We were in the clear by about 8 months old.

babysharksb1tch · 27/09/2022 08:53

Oh, I'd also gently hold her hand and give her little hand squeezes to try and stop the scratching. I'd also gentle stroke/ pat the affected area. Sometimes used a cool flannel to put on it as well.

Laurappo · 27/09/2022 08:56

Thank you - ill try those and speak to the GP about an anti histamine.

Baby is bottle fed but GP isn't concerned about CMPA. No other symptoms and it only started recently so apparently she isn't considering it at the moment. I will mention it to her again though when I speak to them

OP, if you are on Instagram follow "Free to Feed". They've just shared a really good post about eczema, they also have a website too. Hope today has been a better day for you.

bigbluebus · 27/09/2022 20:57

My DS was the same as a baby - covered in eczema. We used Aveeno cream and Aveeno oatmeal bath sachets. GP also prescribed steroid cream. We used to put long socks on his hands over his baby grow at night to stop him scratching as they were harder to pull off than scratch mitts. We tried him on soya milk but it made no difference so switched back to ordinary formula.
He did eventually grow out of his eczema.

Laurappo · 27/09/2022 21:11

Thank you for all your posts. I've purchased most of your recommendations today so will give them all a try.
Just going to have a look at that insta and have put long socks on his hands. He has just fallen asleep...
Today was ok... I kept him distracted and busy most of the day so he was less itchy. I though am exhausted.

GP is certain it's not CMPA. I may still try a diary free formula but I'm not sure it will make much difference. It's just so upsetting there isn't an easy answer. I would do absolutely anything to take it away from him and take it myself.
I will keep you all posted. You are all so lovely to share your recommendations and experiences ❤️ I appreciate it so so much.

For now, I am going to hit my head on the pillow while he is settled

Xx

Oh forgot to say GP prescribed zeroderma (think that's how its spelt, tub is downstairs)

Have tried it this evening. Very thick and did seem to flare it up even more but after an hour it looked calmer....
Time will tell though...

goldenochre · 28/09/2022 20:35

Hope you are doing well. Yes, i think it is zeroderm we were prescribed it too, like thicker version of petroleum jelly.. it worked for us with the steroid cream plus the eczema sleeves..

Now its colder and drier so we can see it is starting to flare up. We went to gp yesterday to have her checked and got repeat prescription of both..

Its hard but keep doing what you are advised by gp and see after two weeks, its soo hard to keep looking to see if improved but wait :)

goldenochre · 28/09/2022 20:39

I was told zeroderm can be used in bath too but never tried and as alternative to soap. What i mean is you can use water on your lo and use your hands to kind of massage the cream onto the skin and it wont wash off that easily. When i pit DD for a quick shower(when she has previous application of zeroderm on her skin) i use water to kind of massage and you can feel the cream. You can wash it off and reapply.

Ofcourse you cant substitute it for bodywash but we feel alternate baths can be just done like this.

Laurappo · 28/09/2022 22:42

Thanks @goldenochre . Today has been difficult. He's been so unsettled. It's started to flake a bit now which seems to make him itch even more.

Yeah I've been using the zeroderm as a bath additive and massaged a little bit while washing. It made it really really red after using as a wash but again about 20 minutes later it started to look a bit calmer so I think its doing something. I know these things take time though so going to keep on with it. Parts are looking/feeling leathery now so ringing the GP again and asking for a steroid cream for those bits.

The colder weather definitely doesnt help :(
