Mat Leave

Hi, hope this is the right place to post this.

I am hoping to start TTC again next year however I do not know the maternity policy of my workplace. I am in the UK and I really would like it to not be statutory only as that would be really tough to live on.

A bit of background, it is a very small company with one CEO and everyone else is same level (about 5 of us). Nobody has had a baby before and there are no policies or real HR as the CEO does everything (payroll, recruitment etc etc)

I feel like I can't ask as then he will know I am TTC but I also want to plan financially.

What can I do?

I'm sorry the only thing you can do is ask your company.

Margo34 · 21/09/2022 16:06

Is there a company handbook?

If not, ask.

YouBoggleMyMind · 21/09/2022 16:10

Company handbook or ask. Suspect being a small company it'll be statutory. Good luck 🤞🏻

Unless there is a handbook or policies document for you to check all you can really do is ask. It can also be set out in your contract.

Unfortunately, as its a small company it is probably only statutory but you never know

If you don't want to specifically mention mat leave - you could ask if there's a handbook/details of all company benefits?

Though if it's that small of a company, it's unlikely that it's anything but stat, unfortunately

Mine was in my contract

Thanks for your replies. There is no handbook or policies document, I did receive a contract but I had to really press for that! The contract is very vague.

We are about to employ two new members of staff (likely to be female due to the industry) and I am going to be involved in recruitment so I am planning to suggest I create a company handbook to help them....and therefore help myself!!

I think you're right though, it is likely to be statutory. Going to be hard with cost of living etc!

@anna114young That's a perfect opportunity to suggest that some sort of enhanced maternity leave benefit. Especially if the industry means you have a lot of female staff - just need to explain the benefits of staff retention if you offer something better than stat.

This.
It can also help with recruitment.
