Potty training help

Hey so my 2.5yo has used the potty well for months at home, if he doesn’t have a nappy on then 90% of the time he sits on his potty to wee/poo. This was just a casual thing to see how he got on but he seemed to be really enjoying using it, could hold wee in and run to the potty and just seemed really into it.

So I’ve booked this week off to properly try and implement potty training. We have spent two days in the house and he does SO well when he’s naked and will happily run to the potty, we’ve only had 1 accident in 2 full days whilst he’s been naked. However if we try to put ‘big boy pants’ on, or leggings, basically if he has anything over his bum he just seems to forget about using the potty and wees straight through. We tried a few times yesterday and once today and it just seems like he can’t tell the difference between a nappy and pants.

Is this a sign he’s not ready? It just seems crazy he’s so good at going when naked but can’t get to grips with having pants on. I was hoping to get out to the park for half an hr tomorrow after being stuck in the house for two days but it’ll just be a wee covered disaster.

Doesn’t mean he’s not ready imo- do you wait for him to go to the loo, because going back into what May feel like a nappy he could need instructing again. “Ok we’re going out let’s go to the loo before we go”, “ok we’ve woken up, onto the loo we go”.

Try no pants, and some trousers that fit loosely ie joggers?

I’d go with no pants and trousers that are loose as possible. Anything snug around his bum will just remind him of a nappy.

It sounds like he is totally ready - don’t give up now! Like a pp said I’d go back to prompting him at natural times - when he wakes up, after breakfast, before leaving the house, when you arrive home etc. and you may need to help him pull his trousers down and plonk him on the potty at these times.

If you want to go out, wait until he’s done a wee and then go straight out after for a short trip (maybe up to an hour?), then encourage him to go again once he’s back.

He will get the message within a few days. And accidents are all part of the learning progress.

Yes a book I read said start naked, then no pants and loose clothing, then pants, then venturing out. The three stages might take 2 weeks or more to complete. I would say he sounds ready. You've just got to commit and see it through.

We potty trained DD at 26 months, we did two days bare-bummed at home too which she took to it straight away with no accidents. Day 3 onwards for a week or so we did trousers but no underwear. The first day of wearing trousers there were a couple of accidents, the first wee of that day she basically just did a huge wee in them and then after that she understood to go to the potty, but she kept going to sit down on it with her trousers still on, we had to be quick to pull them down for her initially or she'd forget and sit on the potty and wee in them haha. After a few days she got the hang of it all, with her being fairly young she did need some assistance with the actual mechanics of pulling trousers down and up again for a few weeks iirc until she got the hang of it all herself.

I would continue but try trousers with no underwear.

Also, we had a carry potty that we took out with us in the early stages. DD was a super frequent wee-er in the first couple of months, so we had to take it with us everywhere really. She liked using it though and meant there were very few accidents. I'd look at getting one, you could take that with you to the park etc.

He definitely sounds ready to me. He needs loose trousers. If you have been doing potty training but putting him back in nappies too it’s going to take him a bit longer.

Agree with PP. Loose trousers and no pants. We only put pants on after a couple of weeks and never had a problem.

Joggers are loads easier to get up and down than other types of trouser so we just stuck with those until she got the hang of it. Nothing worse than being desperate for the toilet and having to faff round with complicated clothes.
